Hike up to the old Lutz mine at Frogponds above Copper Creek.

I found a few old mines above Copper Creek. I haven't hiked up to any of these yet, but Google Earth is showing there are still building standing. There are several mine sites within walking distance from each other. The scenery around these mountains is amazing. You should have at least moderate hiking skills and be in good health. Bring a light lunch or a snack and at least a quart of water. This will by necessity be a full day trip. You will need a back pack, hiking shoes, a light rain jacket or poncho and a change of socks in case the ones you are wearing get wet. Expect that there may be snow on the ground in places. Bring a camera.

Could you approximate how many miles we will hike and how much elevation gain we would be climbing.

500 to 700 feet at most. Most of the hiking will be fairly level. About 4 to 5 miles. Some of the terrain may be a bit rugged; fallen trees, rock formations. Nothing that requires ropes or climbing gear. I was up in that area yesterday to climb up Three Ponds. They were doing some logging in Green Canyon earlier in the summer, so all the roads in that area are pretty good. No snow. Plenty of mushrooms and wildflowers after that rain last week.

John, since we're neighbors now we could carpool.

Just a suggestion - Google Earth was last updated in 2012 for Missoula City and perhaps longer ago for more rural areas. I suggest calling the local forest service to see if the buildings are still standing.

Well Sarah, tell me who to call. I have no idea how you expect a 100% guarantee of safety when hiking out into the mountains. I hike alone in this area 2 or 3 times a week, summer and winter. If you have a number of someone who has been up to these mines within the last couple of days that will know the road conditions, give me their number. Safety is a priority, way high up there on the list, but we're not climbing Everest. This is fairly tame, but anyone without at least moderate hiking and mountain skills should not be going to begin with. That was stated in the original proposal.

Chill, Sarah. We'll have a great time.

If the area is snowed in on Saturday or the road obstructed for any reason this early in the season, there is another complete mine a bit more easy to access just a few miles down the road, near Moose Lake, that we could explore instead. The old wooden mine, as well as cabins and smelting shed, are a bit dilapidated, but still intact. It's not much of a hike though.

Is there a lot of elevation gain? You had mentioned snow.

The elevation of the Miller mine is at about 7400 feet and the Lutz mine is at 7600. I was up about the level yesterday and there is not snow at that elevation yet. Can't say what conditions will be like on Saturday though.

Won't be able to make it this day, as I'll be in the midst of a move across town. Sorry! Hopefully I can make a future excursion!

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
