Hi guys,
I am the last person to look into your pockets or to judge anyone, but let's put things into perspective here, we are talking about 2 dollars!! 

We are all struggling in this economy, but also Ali that does an amazing work of planning events for us to all get together and Kathy that established this group - have paid the membership fees out of their own pockets. 

I think it is very sad that people would rather quit the group than pay 2 dollars, less than a price of a coke when we go out, but think it's fair for Ali to finance the cost, on top of doing all the wonderful free work she does of thinking about interesting things to do, putting her house up in order to have a place for some of the meetings and so on.  I did not know until recently that the organizers had to pay "Meetup" website to be on it. 

Come on people.... it is 2 dollars and I don't think only new people should be charged. If each member paid 1 buck there would be enough funds to pay for 5 years, but why do we expect Ali to pay that and threaten to leave if we are asked to contribute? nobody can be that selfish! And do you even realize how hard it must be to even ask for help??

I apologize if I upset anybody, it was not my intention, but it hurts me that Ali, who is sweetheart and does such an amazing service, and obviously Kathy, who started this group, who was a single mother too back then, have taken the costs upon themselves for years and when people are asked to help with a buck or two they rather quit??? seriously????


Love you Ali, thank you for the amazing work you do, and Kathy, I would not know any people in this town if you hadn't started this group. I hope you both realize how much you are valued and appreciated.

Thank you everyone for your replies. Based on the feedback I am removing the membership fee for new members and have changed the button back on the home page to a donate button. I will just send out an email when the fees are due and if anyone would care to donate, it will be greatly appreciated. Thank you, have a good weekend and hope to see you at an upcoming meetup. Ali

I am emailing you because I would like your feedback on an issue. Anyone receiving this email who was a member to this group prior to mid-January of this year is aware that I had sent out an email to this group at the end of December last year and the beginning of January this year asking for donations to help pay for the costs associated with running this site. Appreciatively I had enough of you respond that we received enough to pay the fees for this entire year. Due to this generosity I was looking at a way to not go back to you in January of 2014 and ask you to donate again if I could avoid it. This is why I added a membership fee to the group. The goal of the membership was to hopefully earn enough over the course of the year to pay for the next year’s fees or at least a good portion of it. The issue with this is I have to rely on the good old honor system of once you join that you will go to the membership button and pay the fee. The problem is, since I have implemented this out of the 26 members that have joined only seven have paid and one has quit due to my follow up email about the fee. There is a message that pops up when anyone joins making them aware of this fee and how to pay when they join. Due to people not taking care of this consistently at the beginning I have gone back and added that non-paying members after a week will be removed.
This is why I am reaching out to all of you to ask you for your feedback before I remove 18 members for non-payment at this time. Would you rather me send out an email once a year asking people to donate like I did before to raise the funds to cover the fees to run the site or do you think I should keep the membership fee and remove members for non-payment. Personally I would rather not be removing members and having track people as they join. I would rather go the route of sending out an annual request as needed and letting those that want to donate do so. Nonetheless, if I get enough feedback from people saying they prefer the fee because they don’t want to be asked yearly then I will stick with that.
As a side note, please note that I have cancelled using PayPal and will just be using Amazon payments going forward. I hope this is not an inconvenience for anyone. I have done so because each of these services keep a portion of the money you pay when using their service and PayPal’s portion was just too significant to continue using them.
