The Lumiere installations were definitely well worth going to see.
We parked at the Central Station and got the train to Durham £6.70 return.
I was in the company of 26 meet up members at the Slug and Lettuce, (not sure where the other 70 members got to) we then broke into smaller groups to walk around the city.
The Cathedral light show was awe inspiring, there were many other clever projections and installations.
We caught the last train home, the train was delayed and we arrived back in Newcastle around 00.25.
Lovely company, and a brilliant not to be missed time.
Thanks to Craig and Claudia, Craig for taking on this responsibility and reserving most of the comfy sofas in the Slug and to Claudia, for guiding us through the city so we saw most of the important and interesting stuff in the time we had.

Hope everyone enjoys this event. Due to the numbers involved we will not all be going round together. Even if we can find people at the start chances are we will end up being split up in the crowds as we move. So I think its best if we split into small groups of 4 - 8 people that way no one will be going round on their own. Craigs idea of the slug and lettuce as a meeting point / 'lost' meetup member point is good and its not intented for us all to stay there all night.
Thanks in advance to Craig for posting this event 14 months ago and for hosting it.

OK .. some more thought on this .. I think my split message..due to word limit may have confused things .
The area at the Slug is reserved from 6pm . This is intended as the initial meetup point , in the warm , dry and importantly light. It is NOT the intention to stay here until 7-30, when the restictions removed.
Those that have tickets to the central area can team up and explore the market place and cathedral areas. At 6 pm the restrictions to try to control numbers will still be in place until 7-30 .. so you won't be joining the non tricketed crowds having your VIP ticket.
Others can explore the unrestricted areas and then see the Market Place and Ctahedral areas which are open access from 7-30 .
We can then re-group for thoise still about at the Slug 9-30 / 10-00.
These plans allow flexibility and hopefully ensure that the many new members attending have a group to go around with, whether tickets held or not.
PS Take some great snaps .. we may have a photo competition !

Hi Sara ... most people don't have tickets .. thats the problem .. feel free to see the central area from 4-30 onwards when it opens as you have tickets ... I just have the impossible task of trying to have some sort of arrangements for 100 people ... I appreciate anyone with children may want to be around and done earlier, which makes sense with tickets ... else can only access market place and cathedral area after 7-30 ... but other exhibits to see .... so can either drop in to see people at 6pm initial meeting point or later on 9-30 - 10-00 ..
Hope this clarifies things ... I will probably be down the Slug & Lettuce for 5-30 .. so anyone with tickets feel free to meet earlier and go into the central area .. It is unclear if you have to surrender your tickets or if you go in earlier you can come out and go back in again .. which I might do 4-30 to 5-30 ...

We can then break into smaller groups , ensuring no newbies or nayone is left alone as Billy No mates .. to explore Lumiere and maybe a pub or 2 along the way.
If no tickets , explore Old Elvet and North Road , before the market Place and Cathedral area open to everyone , unrestricted from 7-30 pm .
Flexible meetup at Slug & lettuce reserved area betweeen 6 pm and 7 pm.
Break into groups to explore Lumiere .
9-30 - 10-00 pm Regroup opportunity for those still about at Slug & lettuce again.
( As this is one of the bigger pubs and easier to spot people )

Looking forward to meeting everyone! I wanted to ask 2 things amonst this group of intrepid Lumiere explorers...
1) Is anyone a really good photographer and willing to share their pics of the event ?
2) Is anyone a techno-phile and, while at Lumiere, willing to test run an app I've created for this event? It's here: http://bit.ly/17hzUQ2 and I'd just ask a few questions about it.
please let me know if so! would really appreciate it and looking forward to Lumiere. It'll be my first time at this event and at a meetup in the area.

I have smoozed the staff at the Slug & lettuce pub ( Millennium Place ) ... with an area being reserved set aside for us ...
I convinced them that we would like to share our Meetup Lumiere experience with them ..... details to follow in e mail .. with phone number in case you can't find us in the pub ...
Once we are all on the move it will be difficult to meet up again other than at the end ..... when we will look to meet , probably at the same pub again 9-30 / 10-00 ish for those still about ..
Hope that sheds some light on plans ? Craig

Just back from a recce mission into Durham .. some displays setting up and look spectacular ... Every traffic cone in Durham looks to have been called up into National Service.... please note there are TOW AWAY ZONES in operation in some areas ..
If you are still thinking over your travel plans ... I would suggest either coming down / up to Durham by train or use the park and ride sites as Durham will be very busy , with approx 30,000 people expected each day ....
See my earlier posts with links to travel and parking ..

I'm popping into Durham tomorrow evening to speak with the Slug & Lettuce to try and reserve a table as out meeting point .... we can then split into smaller groups to see Lumiere ... and a notional meetup point later on between 9-30 / 10-00 pm to regroup for a drink for those still around ...
The plans will need to be fluid with almost 90 meetupers now attending ... wrap up warm , and bring your camera and some good footwear as cobbles and riverbank to negociate along the route !

There is a map now of the locations of the different light sculptures ... mainly , but not exclusively based around the City Centre .. The map will also help people who don't know Durham like the back of their hands ... Remember it is just the market place and Cathedral areas which are ticketed between 4-30 and 7-30 , with free access after that ... as you will see there is still plenty of unrestricted Lumiere exhibits and other things to see before then ....
As numbers are rapidly approaching 50 for this we will need to split into smaller groups for going around to keep things manageable ...with a start and finish Meetup (TM) Point ...
See the link to map of exhibist below ..
