Join us on a hike through two old, abandoned mining ghost towns (Sommersville and Stewartville). Back in the mid 1800s to the early 1900s the Black Diamond mining towns were the most productive coal mines in the state of California and supported the construction of San Francisco, Stockton and Sacramento. We will be able to tour an old sand mine, hike up a trail that was used by miners to travel between Sommersville and Stewartville, visit Rose Hill Cemetery and enjoy a great view of the Stewartville Valley.
For those of you that would like to stay after the hike and have lunch together, bring something to share and please post it in the comments so we don't duplicate.
Note: This hike is rated MODERATE +++ since the total elevation gain is approximately 1800 ft and the hike is 7.5 miles. Please remember to bring plenty of water, sturdy hiking shoes and hiking poles if you use them. There is a $5 per car parking fee unless you get in the gate before 9am, the attendant isn't usually there till after 9am. This hike is being combined with another Meetup group Diablo Valley Discovery Hikers.
