Full Moon Photography

Inspired by tonight's moon, I wanted to see if anyone was interested in doing a Full Moon Photography meetup somewhere in the area. I am game for the Northshore or NOLA. Open to suggestions on location. I think the next best opportunity (obviously weather dependent), is March 15th. Since getting higher (one thing recommended for moon photos) isn't really an option here, maybe something cool within the shot such as the city scene, trees, etc would be cool to have as a background. I think doing some HDR shots also might be fun to try. Meeting ahead of time to get the cameras set up, scout out a possibly good point to shoot from, and setting up the tripods is probably a good idea as well. Sunset time for MArch 15th is 709pm, so maybe meeting around 5:30pm somewhere to get organized, set up, and have a chance to do sunset shots and moon shots is an option too. Obviously, this meetup will be entirely weather dependent and may be cancelled due to conditions outside. I have included a few links of articles about shooting the moon and what may be needed. I advocate a larger telephoto lens than 200mm, so renting a lens for this may be in order if you do not have one.

Will at a minimum need a tripod, knowledge on how to work your timer on your camera (or a cable release or wireless trigger), telephoto zoom lens, and willingness to take a lot of trial and error photos! Those who may be able to work Photoshop could do some processing of the photos with HDR (or another software of choice). If someone knows how to do this, maybe a small presentation to share the information would be helpful too!

Found a great spot for the moon rise early last night to the right of NOMA over the bridge looking over Big Lake, but the clouds would not break. Ended up taking a few shots around the park.

What time are photographers meeting since the time listed is not correct?

    May 16

  • Alex

I am sorry I have not been able to keep up with this. Between traveling and getting ready for a cross country move in 10 days, this has slid down the list of priorities. We were suppose to move in August and at the last minute it got moved up to mid-may. UGH. Is there another organizer who can handle this please? I am sorry about the time change issues, I forgot to look up moonrise times when the last one was cancelled due to weather.

I just looked at a moon rise calendar. Moonrise for tomorrow is 9:54 pm. Am i looking at something wrong??

Just looked at my app for moonrise and it says 9:45pm

Saw great reflections just before sunset and over an hour after. Breaks in the clouds showed deep blue skies but moon was hidden. I got some good shots. See you Friday.

    May 14

  • Bryan

The event host (Alex), has been out of the country until today, so that is why you have not heard from her. (also why it was scheduled for Friday) We are also out of town, so can not attend. Looks like weather will be better on Friday anyway... Enjoy!

Just got home from the moon shoot , no moon , but got some interesting photo of the area clouds, shadows and reflections. The trip was not a total loss.

I'm going to go this evening as well. It would be nice to get a Cloudbreak with the after sunset colors and the moonrise about the same time. Awesome!

Is anyone going out tomorrow?? I am willing!

    May 13

No problem , I will be there IF the rain stops and the clouds part enough to see the moon.

    1 · May 13

since it's next week can we get the day/time for this set? given the info in Elton's post the current day/time would mean missing moonrise. IMO wednesday would be better since we will have both full moon and it will rise earlier. if we are at or near NOMA when will the moon actually clear the tree line? and if google earth doesn't deceive me getting the moon over the museum will be tricky to say the least. there is an open area on the left as you look at the museum from the front. there is street parking and i'd guess it won't be crowded on a wednesday at night. i suggest that for the shooting spot.

To all, full moon will be Wednesday rising at 7:53 pm. Friday the 16th the moon will be 2 days past full rising at 9:54 pm. Here is the link to the moon calendar - http://www.timeanddate.com/worl...
We need to move the meetup 2 days if you want the full moon at dusk.

    March 15

  • Alex

I have been watching the news on and off throughout the day. Right now it looks like we may end up with significant cloud cover and a chance of rain for saturday evening. I will keep watching the weather to see if any changes are made. We really will need at least some clear skies to do this photo shoot. Once again Mother Nature is proving she doesn't care about our plans! LOL. Please keep an eye out as this event may be cancelled due to weather.

    March 14

  • Jacque R.

According to Laura Buchtell this morning, it is going to be very cloudy tomorrow with a 30% chance of rain which could increase by tomorrow. I suggest we simply wait until the long-range forecast predicts clear skies for the weekend, then make plans.

Hi y'all, I'm new to this group – and photography! My camera is a Panasonic LUMIX DMC-TZ7. Will that work out?

    March 6

    • Dave

since we are planing on a full moon and if you zoom in then yes. however you will need a tripod and use the self timer.

      March 6

    • Stefanie

The camera offers a few options – but I'll check the manual again. Thank you though.

      March 7

  • Dave

re tripods, i have more than one. would anyone like to borrow one? should i just put an extra in the trunk?

    March 6

    • Stefanie

Yes! Would be great if I could use it. Thanks :-)

      March 7

  • Jacque R.

Did anyone ever say where we're meeting?

    March 6

    • Alex

We are meeting at Morning Call in City Park about 530pm. I am asking people to be ready to go out and scout places shortly thereafter, so maybe slightly before 530pm.

  • diane d.

Would live to do the full moon photo meetup, but I am sorry that I cannot attend.,

  • Ed

Where are we merting? Morning Call in City Park or Cafe du Monde in the FQ?

    February 22

  • Donna L.

I am game for moonshots anytime. The best time of course is when the moon is on the horizon so tell me when and where and I will be there!

    February 20

  • Dave

if we are shooting moon shots in city park imo we need to be behind tad gormley stadium. unless of course there's a game.:) the light pollution in new orleans is nothing to scoff at. now i may be all wet thinking we want to get a great shot of the moon's surface as opposed to having the moon in a shot of, say, NOMA.

    February 19

  • William H P.

I looked up the Moon rise for March 15 it is at 6:28pm. Also , I have three suggestions for the meet up. One, city park the Moon rises over NOMA. We could meet at cafe du Monde . Second , at William blvd and the lake it rises over the Casino. Third , New Orleans Marina - the point - Moon rises over the lake .

    3 · February 15

    • Alex

I like the NOMA idea, it's a large building that is easy to find and rather recognizable to people in the area. I also like the idea of meeting at Cafe du Monde, so I will set that up as our location. Thanks again for the info!

      February 19

    • Jacque R.

So, we are meeting at Café du Monde instead of Morning Call? Have we got an actual time yet?

      February 19

  • William H P.

If you are looking for a (app) program to find out sunrise/sunset or moonrise/ moonset. If you have a apple phone there is an app you can down load. Call " The Photographers Ephemperis" it will let you find sunrise/sunset, moonrise/moonset on any day at any elevation for any location you are planning to be. It cost a little, but I have been using it for a couple of years and it works great. I use it all the time I going to shoot at night.

    February 19

  • Mallory

I am taking a night photography class the week before so this will be great to practice my skillz!

    February 19

  • Amritendu M.

Maybe you all know this one, but if you don't, download this software. It tells you when and at what direction you will have the sunrise and moonrise. A fabulous tool and very easy to use. The desktop version is free but costs you around $10 for the smartphone version. I just have the desktop version.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
