DARPA 100 Year Starship (100YSS) and Hackerspace Space Program HSP discussion

Hi folks, As many of you have seen in the news as of late, DARPA has released their 100 Year Starship (100YSS) solicitation proposal (see http://www.comspacewa.... The 100 Year Starship is a project to, “develop a viable and sustainable non-government organization for persistent, long-term, private-sector investment into the myriad of disciplines needed to make long-distance space travel viable. The goal is to develop an investment vehicle--with the patronage and guidance of entrepreneurs, business leaders, and technology visionaries--which provides the stability for sustained investment over a century-long time horizon, concomitant with the agility to respond to the accelerating pace of technological, social, and other change.” DARPA’s award includes a $500K grant to cover start-up costs. Just as important, such recognition would open up new doors for finding strong partnerships, investors, and talent. This is an amazing opportunity for us to bring together our own ideas about commercial/private space ventures. Let’s act quickly and respond to this proposal! If you are interested in responding to the 100YSS proposal solicitation, please let us know and: (i) provide some dates in the next two weeks that work for you (let me tentatively suggest September 10th); and (ii) reach out to your friends and fellow space enthusiasts to see who else might be interested in helping put together a proposal response in accordance with DARPA's requirements. This could be a very exciting opportunity for us! Looking forward to hearing from all of you! Regards, C.J. and Julia

Jerry Isdale will be visiting Alpha One Labs and we'll be discussing the Hackerspace Space Program as well as the 100YSS - It will be an open discussion and we'll have free pizza for everyone who RSVPs.

Yeah I agree Charles, I think the organization involved would need a commercial interface as well. Hey Omar,
Here is the direct link to the pdf:

I didn't read Dorthy's proposal, where can I get a copy? I'm just interested in the aspect of this that deals with building the space vehicle. Everything is connected to that task. If we think outside of the box and not repeat the same systems that NASA has already done, it is possible to complete a ship in under a year. I think I have real ways to complete the projects.

Dorothy J's proposal is kinda weak milk, don't you all think? A foundation? How the hell is that supposed to withstand the financial and governmental rigors of time and get us to the 100YSS goal? Its all just a little bit odd.
