I started playing double bass less than two years ago. Had never played a stringed instrument before aside from failed attempts at guitar. Previously I had played flute, piano, and tuba/sousaphone. Took a 10 year haitus from all music after kids were born. That was silly of me!
Classical music is a whole new world to me, and it's wonderful to play amazing music with this dedicated and fun group. I'm learning every day. I'll play pretty much anything that is put in front of me, but I am particularly fond of Beethoven symphonies. They are harrowing for a beginner like me, but I do my best because it's worth it. Just getting a taste of the sublime is more than I could ever ask for.
I come back week after week because I'm in charge! Haha. No really, I have never been part of a nicer group of people who are all working together to bring these gorgeous works of art to life. I often get emotional at rehearsal because I can't believe I have the opportunity to play, say, a Beethoven symphony with others. I learn what other sections are doing and I learn that I can push my limits every week. The fact that we are not professional musicians doesn't matter, what matters is that we all love to make music together.
I'm one of the co-founders of the NewWSO. I am relatively new to the world of classical music, but love learning and playing alongside my fellow musicians.
