Wichita Mountains In Search of Eagles

The Wichita Mountain Wildlife Refuge is hosting a "In Search of Eagles" interpretive program for the public. Guides will take us via bus into the restricted special use areas of the refuge where we will search for bald and golden eagles. The program will help visitors understand eagle behavior and identify features of the birds.

Cost for the program is $5 cash or check. It is recommended that you bring binoculars for a better view of the Eagles.

We will meet-up at the Hobby Lobby off I-40 between S MacArthur and N Rockwell at 8:30 to carpool/caravan. The plan is to enjoy dinner after the program at the world famous Meers restaurant and then drive back to OKC. Hopefully the weather will be nice and we can enjoy a picnic lunch prior to the Eagle program.

I currently have a reservation for 5, Joe has 5, and Priva has 5 bringing us to 15 reserved spots. After we reach 15 attendees I will need all others to call[masked] to secure another reservation. Due to the limited number of slots available for this event please update your RSVP as soon as possible if you find you are unable to make it.

Just a few reminders. We are meeting at 8:30 with the goal to leave by 9:00 AM. Please call my cell[masked] if you are running late. I suggest wearing layered clothes and comfortable shoes for walking at the wildlife refuge. Meers does not take credit card so bring cash if you are joining us for dinner. We will stop along the way to grab lunch. Looking forward to seeing everyone tomorrow!

I might want to get back early. I don't like the thought of my poor doggie in the bathroom for 11 hours.

Shawn there is one spot left if you want to call and reserve a spot on the tour and join us Saturday.

    January 17, 2013

  • Jennifer

This trip is setup to be flexible and easy to adjust. Trust me this is the 4th time we've done this trip. It really is easier not to sweat the details. It will all work itself out when we meet together Saturday morning.

I remember something about a picnic lunch, but don't see it anywhere.

When I called the other week to make the 2 reservations for Kevin and myself, the guy said the program wasn't until 1 or 1:30. Curious as to why we are leaving so early?

    January 15, 2013

    • Jennifer

Because it takes just under 2 hours to get to the welcome center, add in the 30 minutes spent getting everyone together to actually leave, time to visit the museum before the tour, and the recommendation to check in 30 minutes early to make sure we don't loose our spots :-)

We've done the Wichita Mountain trip several times. It's usually easier to combine for carpooling at the Hobby Lobby location. "Knock on wood" We've never had a problem with leaving cars in the parking lot or not having enough people willing to drive.

I can up the total available spots to 17 :-)

    January 7, 2013

  • Julie

OK I just called and made a reservation for 2 people, for Kevin and myself. I figured that would be the safest thing to do since we're trying to plan this as a group. Therefore I didn't RSVP here so, in theory, there should be 1 spot left that someone else reserved.

    January 7, 2013

  • Julie

So how many reservations have been made and spots are now available?

    January 6, 2013

    • Jennifer

We currently have enough reservations for 15 people. If you and Cool Kevin want to join us it looks like you would just need to call to get a spot for one of you.

      January 6, 2013

  • Jennifer

Based on the RSVP would someone please call the refuge and reserve another 5 spots. There is no up front financial cost. Please post with how many spots you were able to get.

    January 3, 2013

    • Priya

I would like to add a plus 1 - but not sure how. My husband & I will meet you all at the museum. See you there!

      January 5, 2013

    • Jennifer

I went ahead and added your plus 1. You should be able to click the change RSVP button on any event to add guests or change to a No.

      January 6, 2013

  • Jennifer

Any new members after 10 who would like to attend please call[masked] to reserve a spot for the "In Search of Eagles" program. Each person can reserve up to 5 spots.

We have done Wichita Mountain meetups in the past. The great thing is they offer flexibility. We have found meeting at the Hobby Lobby helps get us with a good headcount and helps drivers who have never been find their way. We usually consolidate into vehicles that morning. I'm glad we have everyone a reserved space now :-)

    January 3, 2013

    • Jennifer

Thanks Joe. Yes post here if you were able to get on the program list and how many spaces you were able to get.

      January 3, 2013

  • Jennifer

Can I please get someone to call[masked] to book a reservation for 5 tomorrow.
The refuge only allows an individual to reserve space for 5 so i can not add to the one we already have. These programs fill up fast. If no one volunteers to call several people will be disappointed and unable to attend. There is no up front cost to make a reservation.

I've always wanted to do that, but always had trouble finding someone who wanted to go and commit. So, this is a for sure for me! Great!
