Three people have had to cancel. Should we reschedule this meetup for two weeks from now or move forward with it. Opinions?

      I agree with John's math.

It's probably too late to reschedule in any event. I'm hoping everyone who has signed up as yes right now will be there, though that's usually not the case. Laura, Ashley, Fred, and Jennifer are out.

I've had a flare-up of bronchitis and broke a fever this morning. I've got it under control, and I was going to make the effort. But let me know? [masked])

John, I can't open your file with the suffix .odt. Could you repost as a word document?

I've been researching agents, ran across this and thought I'd pass it on. It's from an interview with Stacey Glick, a VP and agent in Dystel & Goderich Literary Management, a very big and powerful agency.

(If the agent likes your query, they typically request about 50 pages of your ms. Then...)

Interviewer: What are three things that elicit automatic rejections from you when reading the first 50 pages of a manuscript?

SG: A slow start, an unlikeable/unrelatable protagonist, too much/not enough dialogue.

Along the same lines, an interview with Alyssa Henkin, an agent at Trident:

[Interviewer]: What are three things that elicit automatic rejections from you when reading the first 50 pages of a manuscript?

Alyssa: Too much back-story that feels like an information dump, a feeling that I’m not caring about this character enough, chapter breaks that happen long after they should.

Has anyone read this book? I could become a fan of YA fantasy, much to my surprise.

Tough I may have to miss a few if they coincide w/ WC matches starting this Thursday. BRZ v CRO starts @ 4pm so I may be a little late. S/b an utter rout but you never know.

    I'll be there.

John has decided to submit a query letter rather than a chapter this time. Since discussion of the letter should be brief, we have space for one more submission for this meetup from eligible members. Please let me know if you'd like to submit something.
