Nerd Nite Austin

We all know that learning is more fun when you’re drinking with friends and colleagues. Thus, Nerd Nite is a monthly event held in more than 50 cities across the globe during which several folks give 18-21-minute fun-yet-informative presentations across all disciplines – while the audience drinks along. And there are often bands, acrobats, trivia, and other shenanigans as well. Imagine learning about everything from math feuds or the science of the Simpsons, to the genealogy of Godzilla or debunking beer myths. Fun, right? As nerds and non-nerds like to say, Nerd Nite Is Like the Discovery Channel™…with Beer!

This was my first nerd night. I thought the presentations were great. I didn't catch the snobbish vibe Collin referred to. To me, all of the presenters seemed very passionate, knowledgable and accessible. I imagine it would be difficult to distill one's area of expertise or great interest down to a brief, relatable, easy to understand presentation for a group of diverse people with various levels of knowledge, interest and educational backgrounds. I'm not particularly into math or music, yet I found the discussions intriguing. More than anything, I just love to watch someone get excited about sharing something they love, especially when it's an intelligent topic of meaning and depth.

I was not that impressed, I thought the topic on harmonics (first lecture) was the most interesting. The atmosphere was snobbish and this is in regards to topics that are for the most part very extraneous.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
