November meetup - The Left Hand of Darkness

In November we'll be covering our very first science fiction title. Don't worry, 'The Left Hand of Darkness' isn't about space monsters or talking robots.

Instead,  imagine another planet much like ours, with a few crucial differences.  For one thing, it's always cold.  Freezing cold.  More importantly, it's populated by people who - at least most of the time -  are completely androgynous!

Le Guin grapples with some really complex questions about gender and sexuality in this book.  'The Left Hand of Darkness' might prove to be a more controversial work but hopefully it will generate some interesting discussion.

Thank you to everyone who turned up last night - Really enjoyed chatting to you all! So an interesting question came up about what defines sci-fi and I found a definition that I really liked and wanted to share it with you by Mark Wilson: Science fiction and fantasy both explore other realities than our own. And in the sense that either way what really matters in human nature, the difference is one of setting and environment.

But there is a fundamental difference -- one of aspiration. Humanity can look forward to the kinds of achievements postulated in science fiction, while with another part of our brain we can dream of the impossibilities conjured by fantasy. Science fiction expands our world; fantasy transcends it.

I think I should reread! Looking forward to next week.

(We can all agree that the interleaved tale about the heir of Estre is smoking hot, right? I think I read that one 4 times in a row once.)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
