This monthly discussion group is all about Nietzsche, his background, his influence, and our thoughts, feelings and reactions to him. In the spirit of Nietzsche, let us read him slowly and carefully. All are welcome to join us, from Nietzsche scholar to curious learner. Join us to learn, to share your knowledge, or to plumb your own depths as we probe Nietzsche’s depths. Our group will read and discuss short selections from works of Nietzsche including his depth psychology, his metaphysics, his critique of Western culture and morality, his atheism, his affirmation of life, his revaluation of all values, his celebration of creativity, and many more themes. Most of Nietzsche’s works are available online free of charge. Also, there are many thousands of books and articles about Nietzsche, some of which we can read in this group to help us understand him at a deeper level. My inspiration to form this group stems from a book project to write about Nietzsche’s influence on me and others. In this project I’m relying on knowledge I’ve gained from completing an MA in Philosophy with a thesis on Heidegger’s interpretation of Nietzsche’s metaphysics. Later, I completed an MFA In Writing. My MFA thesis was a philosophical and psychological memoir. While writing it, I came to realize what a powerful influence Nietzsche has had on my life. What I like best about Nietzsche is that he helped me understand myself better, and I am hopeful he might do the same for some of the members of this discussion group. I will get us started with some of Nietzsche’s most thought provoking writings. As we get to know one another, we can decide as a group what selections to read for upcoming meetings.
