Star Trails - Big Meadows

We have tried to get up to the mountains on a few occasions in the past but things never seemed to go our way. Hopefully this time it will! Lets head to the mountains and get some star trails. If anyone wants to stay until the moon rises that might be pretty cool as well!

For those that did not make it, where did you walk to ?

  • Andre W.

I had a great time but it was a heck of a walk back to the cars! Slow and steady we walked in the dark. We did see the stars on a few occasions.

For future trips, can we clarify that if it is cloudy, we have alternate plans/objectives, so it is not all or nothing type adventure. I looked at the forecast of 100% clouds from 7PM on, and figured there was no reason to drive it, cause there were not going to be any stars.

It looks like there is a chance for scattered Thunderstorms which would make for great lighting photos! Bring an umbrella just in case. Hopefully there won't be any rain falling on Big Meadows but some nice storm clouds and lightening in the distance.

Are we shooting from Big Meadows or one of the many overlooks? The overlooks would be great for a sunset shot about 8:15.

The plan is to meet at Big Meadows and spending most of the time there. If some want to go to other parts of the park to make photos that's fine.

    looking forward to this.

If you had to take one and only one lens for Saturday's venue, which one would it be and why ?

    July 22, 2013

    • Harry P.

If you have a wide angle lens this would be a good start. I have shot star trails before using a Canon 17-40 f4 lense and it works very well. It helps to get a wide view of the sky...

Would love to join - I am just a little confuse :
the calendar says Saturday, July 27 from 8:00 to 11:00 PM
according to the event details it looks more like 5:41 AM to 12:47 PM on the following day .
This will be my first time attending and I would to make sure i get it right.

A friend and I are interested in going but we need a ride to get there. Anyone heading to the location from DC?

    June 21, 2013

  • Elizabeth W.

Might get washed out star trails because of the bright full moon... on the other hand, the moon will be full and bright with potential for interesting scenery shots...

    June 20, 2013

    • Vincent K.

Moonrise will not be until after 11pm to so need to worry about the moon. As I said above anyone wanting to stay after 11pm for the moonrise is welcomed to stay.

      June 21, 2013

    • Rose M. V.

Might find a good spot and spend the night under the stars in my car of course, and be there for sunrise hang around for a few more hours and see what I can see.

      June 21, 2013

  • Vincent K.

For those who might be interested in staying past 11pm... Phase of the Moon on 27 July: waning gibbous with 71% of the Moon's visible disk illuminated.
