Great meetup. Looked like there were going to be clouds, but it cleared up and was a perfect night.

There were a few clouds in the beginning but thankfully they cleared out after dark. I'll upload a few more once I'm done post-processing.

There is a vegetation fire east of Julian. Some of the roads S2 Sunrise Hwy are closed. I'll pray for everyone's safety and getting a control on this fire.
I don't know how far away this fire is to our location tonight. If its far away enough the smoke residue shouldn't be a problem?

Hello there, I just rsvp'd. I have a cabin in the area and a few people are welcome to stay over this evening if they don't want to drive back late. The cabin is at the top of Volcan Mountain and its definitely a bit darker at my place than the location for this meetup. Bring a sleeping bag if you think you might want to stay.

Here are some photos taken from my place,

Its a good location for star photography. For a time, Volcan Mountain was considered instead of Mt Palomar for the Caltech observatory.

I don't know the area. What are we taking pictures of : the night sky, the city ?

    July 6, 2013

  • Mai K.

Well according to the forecast it will be "mostly clear" out there this evening so I'll definitely be there. http://www.weather.com/weather/hourbyhour/graph/Santa+Ysabel+CA+92070:4:US?pagenum=2&nextbeginIndex=6

Dang! there are clouds in the sky right now. That can all change by 9PM tonight. Clouds form up quicker and stay longer over the mountains, but there is no way to predict. Sunday and Monday would be better moon days http://www.almanac.com/moon/calendar/CA/San%20Diego/2013-07
but tonight will be almost a perfect night for no moon. I have tried many times to get a spectacular shot of the Milky Way but never got that stunning perfect shot. Maybe tonight!?

Wow! That's the place. I didn't even know google would do that. What's this world coming to? Depending on the weather I will plan on being there with my son.

I think I found the spot you're talking about. If you google "26791 County Highway S7, Santa Ysabel" and use the street view you can see the viewing structure you mentioned. If the weather is clear I'll planning to be there either around sunset or shortly after.

    1 · July 3, 2013

I went to the spot when the telescope association people held a night last year, come to think of it they will probably do it again this year. It is a field south out of Julian I will see if I can get directions. Easier better spot is up that "east grade road" as it is so labeled on the maps, then there is a turn out with a viewing structure built out over the edge of the mountain overlooking Lake Henshaw. That one is easier to find and easier to get to I think. East Grade Road is on the maps coming out of Lake Henshaw from the Santa Isabel area.

  • Mai K.

Any specific location suggestions? Like where in Julian, for example?

    July 2, 2013

  • Gale T.

July 8th is supposed to be a moonless night. I am half way planning to go to Julian or Mt. Palomar to get away from city lights. I have been up there in years gone by trying to get shots of the Milky Way, and it is not as easy as one might think, conditions have to be right, like no moon, no city lights etc. etc. There is a good visitors site on the back side of the mountain on east grade road, overlooking Lake Henshaw and Santa Isabel that hides the lights from San Diego where I have tried in the past to get the Milky Way, thinking about trying it again on July 8th. Anyone want to go with me?

to get good star pictures, it needs to be a moonless night, and just as important get away from city lights or all you get is a is a evenlit sky. I have had to go to places like Julian or Mt. Palomar. any one have experiences different than mine?

    June 30, 2013

The next new (empty) moon is on July 8th. I recommend an event within 3-4 days prior or after of July 8th (while the moon is still empty).

Would like to join the event depending on date and time. I prefer fri or sat nite so i dont have to get up for work the next morn

    June 28, 2013

  • James

Oh, i also found it helpful if the moon is less than 1/8 full. If it is greater than 1/8full, my shutter lengths over 10 min get overexposed even at ISO100, (various apeture). Optionally (if moon is too bright), one could do shorter exposures and use a software to combine the images to make a star trail. I'm good either way. Will bring a thermostat of coffee of chocolate for the event.

    June 28, 2013

  • James

By star night, I am assuming you mean star trails? I would go. I sometimes shoot in a remote location in Ramona. Need to get far enough way from city (city lights) to do a star trail.
