Hello Night Photographers:

It is possible to capture a nice photo of star trails in the bay area.  You must know where and when to go for a best chance at avoiding the light pollution from civilization.

Please join me and other night photo enthusiasts on this dark night to give it a shot, share and learn from others and meet some new friends! Our best chance is on March 11 when the moon sets at 7:31pm and doesn't rise again until 7:34 the next morning.  New moon is 12:51am so the entire night will be very dark.  If its clear and no fog it will be a great opportunity to see the stars.

I'll provide some basic instruction on how to set up your camera, selection of settings, and some basic techniques.  Come share your ideas and learn a thing or two.

For those of you who can, join me for dinner at 6pm at the dinner location (Emailed to Yes RSVPs) then we will then head to the secret location.

Location:

For planning purpose, we intend to meet at a restaurant in downtown Mountain View on Castro Street.

Restaurant location will be email to Yes RSVPs (Please turn on emails from this meetup and check your spam filter)

Proposed Schedule:

Could anyone please provide the location of the shoot? Since I joined the group just now and missed this shoot, trying to find what are the good locations in/near San Jose for star trail photography.

we don't provide locations due to the group size and the time we spend scouting. Star Trails can be taken any where in the bay area http://www.flickr.com...

That's great. I like how the motion of the stars and clouds opposes each other.

  • Saikrishna G.

Waiting for you guys to upload some pictures, my picture came out to be bland because of foreground.
Need to work on my composition next time.

    • Kal

Try a combination of daylight white balance and hue adjustment.

This is the sort of thing where there could be 5 different ways to arrive at the same result. Kal's suggestion is one. Another would be to try adjusting the curves; like decreasing the strength in the red channel.

Hey, Mac users, StarStax is software you can use to assemble your star trail exposures. It can be found here:

I am on the waiting list, should I expect to know for sure by Saturday evening if I would be added to the 'yes' list?

    March 8, 2013

  • AJ V.

I'm currently on the wait list. I am still available in case someone with yes RSVP can't go. Thx.

    March 8, 2013

  • rane

Please remove me from wait list..Will be out of town.

    March 8, 2013

    • Steven C.

Are you having trouble changing your RSVP to NO? I'll do it for you, but we thought Meetup would let you still say "NO" when RSVPs close.

      March 8, 2013

  • Chetan T.

What are the chances of the waitlist people getting in?

    March 4, 2013

    • Peter M.

Depends. 3 weeks to the event that opens to 40 ppl and you are wait listed #3, chances are great! 3 days to an event intended for 15 and you are wait listed $42, not good.

      March 4, 2013

    • Steven C.

Peter, isn't this event limited to 15 people per your permit? But to answer @Chetan's question and @Mumtaz's comment below: there were 70 people on the Fremont Peak Event, 30 of who were "in" that waiting list now has 2 people on it. People do "flake out".

  • Sreeram (Sam) K.

Sorry, I am a new member and I'm not sure how all this works. 6PM, I will not be able to make it. Can I meet you guys directly at the shooting location at 8 PM? Is that even an option or is dinner and meet up prior to shooting a must? :) Thanks!

    March 1, 2013

    • Steven C.

@Sreeram, that you do not currently have a Yes RSVP, nor did you make it onto the waiting list before RSVPs were closed, so you are not eligible to attend this event.

      March 4, 2013

    • Sreeram (Sam) K.

Yeah, I noticed that. Maybe next time then. Have fun!

      March 4, 2013

That's kind of past my bed time. Can we switch this to noon?

Your killing me Mike. Sure let me just move heaven and earth. Thanks for the funny.

Anyone coming from the South around Foster City area and doing a carpool? I will chip in on the gas and other expenses. I am new to the area and don't feel comfortable driving very late at night going home, usually am a sleepyhead.

Hello guys and gals if you intent to capture star trails you really should consider an intervalometer. Some company call it timer control, interval meter...whatever it is it should control the camera to automatically photograph at a preset shutter speed and time interval. Without you can still do it and it just that you'd be chained to your camera hitting the shutters yourself. Fun but not how i like to spend my time. Look for a Canon TC-80N3 or an equivalent for your camera. http://www.bhphotovideo.com/c/product/164271-REG/Canon_2477A002_Timer_Remote_Controller_TC_80N3.html
