ABOUT THIS EVENT
Star Gazing on Mount Diablo and Night Photography
Read this entire document as you will be locked in the park after dark.
You will be escorted off the mountain at the Astronomical Society’s Schedule. You cannot get out of the park gates until they unlock them.
This event is a Public Event sponsored by the Mount Diablo Astronomical Society. We are their guests. When entering the park just let the Rangers know that you are up there to attend the star gazing.
You MUST enter the park gates before sunset, as the park closes at that time. The Rangers leave the gate at this time and you may not enter the park after they leave.
There is a fee to enter the park. $6 per car.
Talk amoungst yourself to figure out carpooling – that would be a great idea. There is a large Strip Mall at Ygnacio Valley Road and Oak Grove Road in Walnut Creek – complete with a Safeway, Gas Station and Ace hardware store – should you need any supplies.
During the Daylight Hours you have the freedom to explore the mountain and take all the photos you wish. As the road winds up the mountain there are many scenic turn outs for photo opportunities. There is a couple of rather narrow road sections – so be cautious and safe. The summit is a wonderful 360 degree panorama. You can see the Sierra Nevada Range and snow capped peaks, as well as the Golden Gate Bridge – it the weather is clear enough. So bring your big lens’ and your tripods. You can also check out Rock City if you like a little rock climbing.
If you come up early enough, there is a museum at the summit that explains the importance of Mount Diablo.
Once you are ready to check out the telescopes, you must come to the parking lot just below the summit and park as directed by the Mount Diablo Astronomical Society member. After you park just walk to the Telescope area and there we will meet up there. The Mount Diablo Astronomical Society will be having a class on Comets this night. Feel free to join up that gathering at 7:00 pm. See Map.
This is a Self Guided event. I will be up on the mountain – so lets meet at the telescope staging area at 6:30 so we can all introduce ourselves and meet the fellow members. After that the Comet presentation will be given by the MDAS and then you can head off to take your fantastic photos and / or check out what the telescopes are looking at. Note: there is the Main Telescope located in the shed. If time permits, the operators will allow you to mount your camera piggy back and get a shot of what ever it is pointed at. It is stunning to see Saturn during the day light hours ! They will assist with camera settings. Be Patient and always ASK for Permission. When you adjust your camera settings be sure to do it outside of the shed. Don’t want to mess up their night eyes.
IRemember this is a MDAS event. Please thank them for allowing us to join them and let them know that you are apart of this group – so that they will allow us back. The MDAS has a monthly event or telescope viewing that is open to the public. So lets Represent !
