Yosemite Nightphotography at Glen Aulin (1night with camping)

  • Jun 8, 2013 · 9:00 AM

READ the event description before signing up!
Also read these pages if you haven't done so already since you joined the group:

This event is about:
Take pictures of Sunset, Milky Way, Startrails at a scenic location in Yosemite. This is a one night event with camping. Hiking to shooting location is required, up to 7miles (one way) with elevation changes several times up and down of a [masked] feet. This is a strenuous hike at high elevation, above 8000ft!

Event Host:
francisco

Event RSVP/waitinglist, lottery, attendance, limit, costs etc:
The waitinglist and lottery is to give everyone that signs up for this event a fair chance to be selected and able to attend because space is limited and this is a special event.
This event is limited to 6. A lottery will be held on April 30th. Everyone on the waiting list will be in the pool for the lottery. People with the most recent no-shows or who have proved troublesome to deal with will get the lowest priority at the selection process.

There will be a cost of $7.5 (incl. PayPal fees) per person to cover the costs of the permit (the area is wilderness and night access/camping is only allowed with permit). There are no additional fees for camping and no camping reservation required for that night.
This fee needs to be paid by the attendee within 2 days after RSVP has been changed to Yes (you'll get a notification with payment information). Refunds (minus PayPal fee) when you cancel only when your spot can be filled by someone else! No refunds otherwise even when trail is inaccessible. It is at the hosts discretion and permit availability to reschedule the event in case the event had to be cancelled.

If you change to a "NO" status less than 3 days prior to the event you are counted as a No-Show.  I'm tracking no Shows for this event. Guests are not permitted.

Accommodation suggestions before/after event:
With the wilderness permit everyone in the group is authorized to stay at the backpackers campground one night before and after the event if you want to (White Wolf, North pines, Tuolumne Meadows, Hetch Hetchy).
For the backpackers campground is no reservation required
It costs $5 per person and night to be paid in cash at the campground. Rangers may ask for the wilderness permit number (I'll give you that number after you paid the wilderness permit fee).
Other suggestions, read here:
http://www.meetup.com/NightPhotography/messages/boards/thread/24787782

Glad to know everyone made it home safely. The scenery at Glen Aulin is amazing and very well worth the 2500+ calories burned on the way in. Thanks for making this a safe and fun event!

Is anyone else planning to drive arrive on Friday? The Touloumne Meadows campground will open this Friday (6/7). There is a backpackers camp behind Loop A where you can spend Friday night for $5. You will need the wilderness permit #.

I'll be driving Friday too. Thanks for the information, I've been hoping that campground would open in time!

Bring insect repellent and maybe a fly/mosy net for your head. Last weekend there were a lot of mosquitoes in Yosemite.

    1 · June 3, 2013

    • Laura Northrup P.

Yes, I second this! And make it's good strong repellent. Even with normal repellent spray I received over 100 bites. Come prepared to see me looking ridiculous in a full mosquito net suit this weekend :)

I did a preparation hike to Mission Peak about 3 weeks ago with about 75% gear (I didn't have all the gear yet at that time) in 3.5 hours round trip including a break for some photos at the top. I'm hiking to Sunrise Lakes this weekend with full gear. I live in SF, so Mission Peak is quite a drive for me. I would like to know if these two hikes are sufficient so I do not have to drive all the way back to Mission Peak this week in addition to the other two hikes?

Hi, I know that the RSVP is closed now, but is there a way which I can join the waiting list. By the time I clicked RSVP(tried at 1pm), status changed to closed :(

    April 30, 2013

    • Enrico

RSVP's is extended until Friday 9pm. It is uncertain at the moment if you'll get a spot, depends on if and how many cancel. I just added you to the waiting list.

      April 30, 2013

    • Shibu T.

Thanks you so much Enrico. I'll wait

Laura, you can just type "Glen Aulin, Yosemite" in stellarium location window. It will provide the details. From 12:00 a.m. till 3:00 a.m. we have perfect milky way right above the south direction. I believe, no matter where we camp and stop for star trails, we should engage our cameras toward south direction :-)

    April 30, 2013

  • Laura Northrup P.

Very excited about this! Do you happen to know gps coordinates of where we plan to stop for star trails? If not, no worries. I am just curious to plug them into Stellarium to see when the milky way comes up, etc.

    April 30, 2013

    • Enrico

You can use the Glen Aulin HSC GPS N°[masked], W°[masked] elevation 2400meter.

Current of NPS is to start plowing min-May with optimistic outlook of having the roads open by Memorial day. The meadow has almost no snow, in other areas are still 1-2 feet of snow but that should change in the next weeks.
