EVENT HOST:  Stuart Nafey & Eric Harness

Come to Half Moon Bay and enjoy a beautiful sunset and a light painting portraiture session. (Sunset not guaranteed.)

Light Painting and Light Drawing uses the same technique as any other long exposure photography. One difference, I use LED lights designed for detailed drawing. This meet up will be indoors!

I will supply a studio setting with 2 black backdrops and an assortment of colored light tools I designed and built myself.

I plan to give a short talk about my style of light painting. Guest artist, Lori Stotko will be on hand to demonstrate her drawing skills and I will shoot tethered in Lightroom and project the images. We can then paint and draw, using each other as models.

The Half Moon Bay Train Depot is a small historic building next to the Johnston House, another historic building here in Half Moon Bay and part of Parks and Rec. There are restrooms and plenty of free parking. It is a fairly dark area after the sun sets and we can continue light drawing outside after 9:30 pm. I will have to charge $10 to cover rental of the building and insurance.

Cameron's Pub is just across Highway 1 and they serve food until 11:00 pm on Fridays. The pub itself is a colorful subject for night photography.

The sun sets at 7:48 and I figure we can be drawing by 8:00.

Want to see some examples? I have a few galleries you can view here.

Due to space limitations attendance is restricted to 20 people.

Lori and I have been drawing and painting with LEDs since 2007 and have demonstrated this at 2 Maker Faires, private events and recently at the Treat Social Club.

There is plenty of free parking at the site.

Q: What do I need to know?
A: It is good to know how to manually control your camera. If you are new to long exposure photography, this is a great place to learn.

Thanks for the kind comments and I hope you all captured some good shots. You can see it is not an exact science and is very improvisational. Some lessons learned:
    - It helps to be able to adjust camera settings quickly without a light
    - Clear communication between the photographer, artist and subject will result in good pictures more often
    - I need more light pens without snoots for drawing
    - Some of my pens were not bright enough for painting faces
    - Getting closer to the subject helps

It was a bit too crowded for some of the exercises. The position of the camera, subject and lights are fairly critical and pictures from the side of the group look very different from shots taken from the center. Unless I can find a venue to break us into smaller groups, the next workshop will have fewer photographers.

Still, I hope you all see the potential and will be able expand on these ideas. You uploaded some great shots. Check out my comments! Thanks for playing!

Excellent meetup session where everyone had great fun sharing Stuart and Lori's tips/tricks for light-painting. Also, many thanks to Stuart for sharing abundant resources in light-painting supplies.
This group will make me a better night shooter in no time.

This was a very fun event! It makes me want to create some LED tools so we do this more often! Can we have a workshop real soon in creating the equipment like paint rollers? Thank you Wing and Eric for organizing this!

  • May

Very fun and enlightening...pun intended. ;) This was an awesome group where we were able to interact and simply "play" with some of Stuart and Lori's tips & tools and tips of the trade. Now that I found the instructions on how to make LED pens and paint rollers, I get to continue playtime to try to become an electrical engineer. Look forward to another event like this in the future!

  • Eric H.

Apperently, meetup is making some changes (un-announced of course) which are sending people random emails about changed RSVP status and sending the organizers emails of changed RSVP status's for meetups the are also not true. This might be the case for some of you on the wait-list sorry for the confusion but I don't understand it an enither does any of the other organizers that heard from.

  • Sherry

Hi Guys, I hate to be a pest, but i've looked everywhere. This is what it says under location. Detailed instructions will be sent to all YES RSVPs after the registration window closes.

    April 7, 2013

    • Stuart N.

Sorry Sherry. Here is a link to a picture with yellow arrows pointing to where I think the button should be. Mine already said paid as I am the host, so I am not 100% sure. And it might be a java or flash problem not showing you the button. Organizers: Please do not delete Sherry for non payment.

  • Amanda H.

I was wondering why I got completely dropped here? I am no longer on the wait list and didn't get an invite but have been marked as no?

    April 6, 2013

    • Stuart N.

Hi Amanda. It appears you were flagged as a no-show from a previous event. I have asked the organizers to confirm this and also responded to your email.

      April 7, 2013

    • Meetup Helper (.

Stuart is correct. You were marked no - show in an event in December, 2012 (less than 6 months ago) as well as an event 14 months ago See
