Pinnacles National Monument (map)
2 Nights of Camping and Night Photography at Pinnacles National Monument
Pinnacles National Monument highlights beautiful rock formations which are the remnants of an extinct volcano that was born 23 million years ago. There are hiking trails, caves, and camping Friday (Sept 10) and Saturday nights (Sept 11). Nice weekend for star trails.
Pinnacles Campground is located near the park entranceon the east side of the park about 85 miles south of San Jose. Note that no road within the park connects the East and West Entrances.

Thanks Steven,
We could also hike approx 0.5 miles on the Condor Gulch Trail from the Bear Gulch Day use area and get good views of the high peaks from the overlook. This would be convenient from the campgrounds near the East Entrance.
From the West entrance, agree the Balconies Cliff trail looks good. Looks like cars must enter by 8pm but can exit after the gate is closed.
Is there a non-camping option? I believe the East Entrance is open 24 hours.
Re: Non camping option. I'll say no... and the reason for saying no is two fold: coordinating possible changes in plans and locations without good cell coverage is not easy. And managing two pools of people with different schedules and goals isn't what I want to do.
I took the liberty of starting of a <href="http://www.bayareanightphoto.com/messages/boards/thread/9...![]()
thread</a> on the forums. Mostly out of utter self-interest.
Hi gang, I don't own any camping gear. Does anyone have a tent I can borrow or one of those huge ones with room for one more?
Looking to carpool from the South Bay. Can be flexible on when we leave...
Angela: Hopefully you have at least a sleeping bag and an inflatable mattress or sleeping pad. That should be all you'll really need. I have 4 tents. I'll bring them all. (The 4th tent is actually a bivvy sack). One is a four man tent. One is a solo tent and the other a two person deal. But you can get a serviceable one from Big 5 for $35 dollars.
I have three sleeping bags, too! I guess I'll throw an extra one in my car.
I can carpool from South Bay too. Rich, I saw that you are interested. Anyone else up for it. I can leave after 3:00 pm
Just talked to Ranger Matt. No open fires, propane only.
Unseasonably cool at 85 right now. Few mosquitos. Some campsites have better shade. Arrive earlier in day change site. Evening programs Fri and Sat. Posted later today. Campground may or may not be full. Trails easy hiking. Won't predict weather for the weekend. Typically over 100. No bears, but other predators (raccoons) count. Keep food protected. I'll get there early Fri p.m. from Mill Valley. Ranger station closes 6pm Fri.
Thanks Tom, Let's keep our campsites 66 and 67 with partial shade and some privacy. Some campsites very close together.
Folks, don't forget to print and bring your waivers!
Hope y'all have a great time. I hated having to cancel but the trip to Shanghai (leaving tomorrow) should prove equally productive in terms of photographic opportunities.

On my drive down South last week I went to the West entrance to Pinnacles NM. There are some nice formations there - but nothing facing north, unfortunately. In fact, it looks like you have to hike to the spires to get a good "North View". There was a nice vista at the Balconies High Trail about .5 miles from the West entrance. Overnight parking is not allowed at the West entrance, by the way the ranger implied I might be able to write the superintendent to get an exception if I wanted.
