Fall Colors in the Eastern Sierra (Mammoth and Beyond)

  • Oct 12, 2013 · 5:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Event is open for RSVPs Tuesday Oct 1st 12pm

Update from Micheal Frye

I'm in Lee Vining now, and the lower elevation areas like June Lake Loop and Lee Vining Canyon are not yet at peak, as there's still lots of green. I'd put them at about 60-70% turned. Places that are a little higher, like Conway Summit, are at about peak, with some bare trees and some green trees. The snow and cold today could have an adverse affect on the leaves that are turned or partly turned; we'll see.

Check for road conditions before you make your trip out there via Hwy120/108 because Tuesday/Wednesday it is expected to snow a couple inches and Hwy120 will be closed Today after 6pm not sure about 108. They will reopen the road when the snow/ice is mostly gone and the road safe to drive.
For Hwy108 road conditions you can check here: http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi?roadnumber=108
For Hwy120 road conditions outside of Yosemite you can check here: http://www.dot.ca.gov/cgi-bin/roads.cgi?roadnumber=120
For Hwy120 in Yosemite: CALL[masked] Press 1 and the 1 again

If 120/108/4 remains closed until Friday. alternate route would be Hwy 88 then 89 or Hwy50 and then 89. This detour adds at least an hour to the usual time to get to the Eastern Sierra from the Bay Area.

If anyone wants to carpool from San Jose I have a Corolla with three seats available, so can accommodate 1 other person comfortably and then two more for a squeeze :)

I will be camping at June Lake's Pine Cliff Resort on Friday night and Saturday night. Or if someone wants to share a hotel room, I would be up for that as well.

I will have to drive back on Sunday evening.

Looks like I'll be working this weekend. Giving up my spot...

    October 8, 2013

  • Paul H

Don't forget, unfortunately Yosemite is closed to the public at this time, in case anyone was planning on driving through it. Hopefully this changes soon!

Would love to join you all, need to check with work though.

I was told yesterday by someone at work; I guess that was incorrect, which is good news because I was planning on seeing Mono Lake and fall colors myself. In fact, I see this is full already; I may go by myself anyway, as I was already targeting that weekend if I can get away from work. :)

      October 2, 2013

    • Steven C.

There are other passes to get there. In fact, most of the time the more northerly pass is actually faster from San Jose to Mono Lake because the speed limit is higher and the road is a bit less windy.
