Over 100 mikoshi (portable shrines) and thousands of participants will gather this weekend to highlight one of Tokyo's most exciting festivals - The Asakusa Sanja Matsuri. We'll have chances to photograph many colorful shrines as they parade through the backstreets of Asakusa, with opportunities to also photograph the many interesting characters otherwise unseen in daily happenings of Tokyo (See images of the festivities here: http://goo.gl/nMuZ02)
This meetup will be on Saturday, though if you have time & are curious - the festival has 3 distinctive days this weekend. From Friday - Sunday, each with different activities. Saturday I think is the most unique being that many neighborhood groups gather to showcase the year's prosperity (and that of their members) in the decorations of their shrine & calibur/size of the neighborhood's members. Meeting point will be Saturday May 17th 11:00 AM, Asakusa Station - Metro Line (NOT JR), Exit 7, directly outside & in front of the Matsuya Asakusa, at the triangular intersection. Check this map link for details : https://goo.gl/maps/hORsC
The festival will run to about 3-4pm, plenty of time to have a few drinks & good food afterwards. Should be a great day all around, see you there !
