This is a pretty cool milestone, I was going to bring it up Thurs., but we never got to it.

It's debatable if this is really synthetic life though.? They replaced the DNA in an existing cell with synthetic DNA and it "booted" up and started replicating.? The DNA sequence came from an existing cell, was modified, and then the synthetic DNA was created from scratch, but:
  • They didn't create the DNA sequence.
  • They didn't create the cell itself which has the molecular machinery to duplicate itself (although, the machinery in the replicated cells *were* created from the synthetic DNA)
  • The process of building the synthetic DNA uses enzymes that come from living organisms.
I think this is really neat, but until a cell is created with no help from current living organisms I suspect people will still claim there is something magical about life, instead of complex molecular machinery.? It will probably be a while before we can do that, and there won't be much purpose to it then, other than to prove a point.
