On Friday, July 26, 2013 at 7 pm The Smithsonian Freer|Sackler Galleries will present Viva Erotica, part of the 18th Annual Made in Hong Kong Film Festival!
Location: Freer Gallery of Art, Meyer Auditorium
Derek Yee’s movie industry satire stars Leslie Cheung as Sing, a down-on-his-luck filmmaker who, after a string of flops, agrees to direct a soft-core porn flick (known as Category III films in Hong Kong). He struggles to maintain both his artistic integrity and his relationship with his girlfriend (Karen Mok) while he deals with a sleazy producer and a tempestuous starlet (Shu Qi) who refuses to take off her clothes. Hyperactive and visually dazzling, Viva Erotica has enough behind-the-scenes references and cameo appearances (including Lau Ching-wan as a jaded filmmaker named … Derek Yee) to satisfy any Hong Kong movie buff. “One of the few satires on Category III filmmaking that manages to be frank, funny and humane all at once” (Edmund Lee, Time Out Hong Kong). Print courtesy of the Hong Kong Film Archive, Leisure and Cultural Services Department and Orange Sky Golden Harvest Entertainment Group. Intended for mature audiences. (Dir.: Derek Yee, Hong Kong, 1996, 99 min., Cantonese with English and Chinese subtitles)
