Trust Me, I'm Lying: Confessions of a Media Manipulator

  • Aug 3, 2014 · 10:15 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

You've seen it all before. A malicious online rumor costs a company millions. A political sideshow derails the national news cycle and destroys a candidate. Some product or celebrity zooms from total obscurity to viral sensation. What you don’t know is that someone is responsible for all this. Usually, someone like me.

I’m a media manipulator. In a world where blogs control and distort the news, my job is to control blogs—as much as any one person can.

IN TODAY’S CULTURE…

Blogs like Gawker, BuzzFeed, and The Huffington Post drive the media agenda.
Bloggers are slaves to money, technology, and deadlines.
Manipulators wield these levers to shape everything you read, see, and hear— online and off.

Why am I giving away these secrets? Because I’m tired of a world where blogs take indirect bribes, marketers help write the news, reckless journalists spread lies, and no one is accountable for any of it. I’m going to explain exactly how the media really works. What you choose to do with this information is up to you.

The discussion was superb, shame about the book.It could have been written so much better.Unless Ryan Holiday decided to reform,I am sure he would not have minded about this write-up.Firstly,any publicity is good publicity and according to him life is all about clicks anyway

Hi Ellie, unfortunately my book has not arrived for me to read. I have been waiting for this book for over a week and now won't be able to contribute to the discussions so won't be
attending :( I hope you all have a great discussion. Polly x

Hi Polly, sorry to hear you won't be able to make it. As I had posted this book at least a couple of months ago, I was hoping that would give enough time for people to purchase it. (It's also on Kindle app / device). I hope you don't mind, but as per VB's email earlier in the month, I'll have to inform her and this will count as a strike against you for dropping out in such short notice.

Hi Ellie, I only have iPhone and the book wasn't & isn't available via iBooks & Amazon only offered via marketplace which I went for.I do understand about the policy but hope I'm not kicked out now as I had one strike I think last year!

Hi Ellie - where will this meetup be held? I live in SE London and so would like to make sure it's not too far to travel. As it's nearing the session I don't want to drop out when it's only a few days left, so wanted to check. Also checking out new venues is part of the attraction of the club for me, so would like to know what I'm signing up for! :-) Cheers.

Hi Sissel, hope Jackson+Rye in Soho works for you? All confirmed now!

Hi ladies, I thought it would be good to try a new venue, and Jackson + Rye could only take us in for 10:15, so hope you don't mind the 15 minute change in our start time. I'm looking forward to meeting you all!

    E xx
