This group is for adults interested in practicing mindfulness through physical activity. We do this through practicing a traditional, non-competitive martial art. No experience is necessary. Unlike many martial arts, our group is entirely non-competitive (no trophies here). Instead we practice in an atmosphere conducive to friendship and growth. We support each other in our effort to improve our physical fitness, our mental focus, and our awareness of mind/body (often called mindfulness). Our group emphasizes the balance between the physical and mental aspects of a traditional martial art.

We meet on Mondays and Thursdays starting at 5:30 pm on the Clemson University campus. Our meetings start with a warm-up period. We then practice a wide range of hard techniques (karate movements as seen in many movies) and soft techniques (tai chi type movements) which we combine into specific self-defense sequences (called kata). Our group works together to discover how the different techniques can be applied.

Don't be concerned if you see only a few people signing up for our meet-ups here. During the academic year, we regularly have 10 to 15 people at each class. Attendance during the summer is a little less regular often due to travel commitments but even in the summer we will train on Mondays and Thursdays at 5:30 pm unless the meetup calendar indicates differently.
