Bad science: quacks, hacks and big pharma flacks, by BEN GOLDACRE

"The informative and witty expose of the "bad science" we are all subjected to, called "one of the essential reads of the year" by New Scientist."

"We are obsessed with our health. And yet — from the media's "world-expert microbiologist" with a mail-order Ph.D. in his garden shed laboratory, and via multiple health scares and miracle cures — we are constantly bombarded with inaccurate, contradictory, and sometimes even misleading information. Until now. Ben Goldacre masterfully dismantles the questionable science behind some of the great drug trials, court cases, and missed opportunities of our time, but he also goes further: out of the bullshit, he shows us the fascinating story of how we know what we know, and gives us the tools to uncover bad science for ourselves."

The Retraction Watch tracks falsified, plagiarized or otherwise flawed papers in major biomedical journals. Typically several new cases per day: http://retractionwatch.wordpress.com/

Hi Everyone, I'm feeling that it would be good to have a few more discussion questions for the meeting. If you have any in mind, even if it's only one question, please send them to me off list. today or tomorrow. Thanks!

Hi Denise, the room capacity is 180. Sometimes we only get half the room but even then, there will be plenty of space for your friend. Providing an accurate RSVP helps us estimate whether we need more moderators.

Are there still "spaces"? I have friend who would like to come along. We read the book together.

"Bad science" happens not only when unscrupulous individuals deviate from proper scientific techniques. State-of-the-art science of today may itself be considered "very bad science" in just a few years.

Example: eugenics fascinated medical scientists for many decades, with forced sterilizations legislated in various countries including Canada. The Alberta Eugenics Board was active until 1972!

"A physician who served on the province's Eugenics Board said the decisions were based on the best scientific advice and medical techniques available at the time. Today, she added, eugenics is being practised in a different way through prenatal diagnosis and therapeutic abortion." See http://www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov/pmc/articles/PMC1335257/ - the title alone is priceless.

Thanks Rose for organizing this. I still have 100 pages to go on my iPad. I've learned a lot. I see this on movies but never really gave too much thought around Pharma trying to protect themselves using scare tactics. I suppose the worlds is pretty dark.

Something to discuss at the meeting ... CFI is supporting a $30 million dollar lawsuit of Shoppers Drug Mart and Doiron Canada for their sale and marketing of a homeopathic product. http://www.centerforinquiry.net/news/harmed_by_homeopathy_cfi_wants_to_hear_from_you/

This book confirms what I suspected not only about big Pharma but goods and services as well. Too bad his advice is not issued at the same time a product or service is put on the market so we could make a decision before we put out our hard earned money!

This book has some great reviews (5 stars) on Amazon and was positively reviewed by the British Medical Journal (according to Wikipedia). Looking forward to reading and discussing it!
