June Meetup - There's a Word for It: The Explosion of the American Language

The winner of the June poll is "There's a Word for It: The Explosion of the American Language Since 1900." The word nerds among us will enjoy this etymological expedition through the American lexicon.

You can find the food, wine, and beer menu for Brick Oven Pizza here.

[As always, book suggestions welcome in our discussion thread.]

Nice to see everyone tonight! As promised, here's the map of ways that language varies across the country: http://www.businessinsider.com/22-maps-that-show-the-deepest-linguistic-conflicts-in-america-2013-6

I'm going to show up for the discussion even though I haven't read the book. 'Word nerd' is a pretty accurate description.

I'm going to bring one or two copies (depending if I can find the second one) of 'The Death of Raymond Yellow Thunder' to loan to anyone who voted for it for next month.

I look forward to finally meeting y'all! I love the idea of a non-fiction group. 'Bout time I started participating!

Unfortunately This location is inconvenient for me. Just curious - Do you always meet at same place? Thanks!

Hi Catherine! I've received feedback from group members that centrally located is best, but if there's a group consensus around another area we could investigate other options. We've started meeting at Brick Oven because of its central location and because they have a quiet space that can accommodate our group whether it's 5 or 15 people. If you know of other venues that serve food and have a nice quiet space where the group can talk, other ideas are always welcome.
