Game Jam Weekend

Hello! This is a weekend of game making. Everyone is welcome, regardless of experience or ability, so long as they're willing to get their hands dirty. It'll be fun, and you'll have made a Thing, guaranteed.

There will be a theme announced at the start of the weekend, and hopefully several small mini-themes lasting a few hours each. Although if you want to do your own thing, that's totally fine, too.

We'll be starting at 10am on Saturday, and finishing at 5 on Sunday. There will also be a planned trip to a local drinking establishment on the Saturday evening, so that'll be fun.

The gamejam is kindly hosted by the School Of Computing Sciences at the UEA  - we'll be in one or two of the computer sciences studios.

The computers at the UEA will have the following capabilities:

Visual Studio 2010 or 2012 for C++ development. This can be used for win32 programming or OpenGL.

Paint .NET for image preparations

Gamemaker Studio Free Version (to be installed especially for the gamejam)

(further software details to follow later)

Or if you want to bring a laptop with your own resources and format of working then this is fine also.

If you are bringing your laptop and have no idea where to start then feel free to take at look at the following link for easy to use software: http://youcanmakevideogames.com/tools

If you have any questions, please get in touch: my email address is [masked], leave a message on the meetup page or I'm on twitter as @SamJermy87

The event is being opened up to students at the UEA and due to the possibility of high numbers wanting to come I will have to introduce a maximum limit of 65 spaces.

Very enjoyable, met some great people and was awesome seeing all the different ways people work with all their different tools.

The event was better than I could have hoped for! The people were amazing, the games were awesome and the time just went too quickly in my opinion. Left the event very happy.

I have a concern that I might not be much use to anyone over the weekend. I'm sure I will still have a great time, but as so many of you are seasoned programmers, and my background is in 3d modelling I fear I might not be able to contribute much. Not owning a laptop and of course being unable to hoof my tripple screen work pc down there is gonna mean I'll be using whatever stock media is available too. :p
Still I guess we'll see how things pan out.

I'm planning to use GoToMyPC to remotely work via my home PC, there's a 30 day free trial available.

For people wanting to know how we are getting into the building, see map on link and follow the below instructions:

    http://www.uea.ac.uk/about/gettinghere/campusmap

Easiest to park in main car park (enter from Earlham Road and onto University Drive (parking marked with A, B or C on the map). Its a flat fee of a pound over the weekend.
The building is the EDU building, building number 9 on the map which can be entered into a door at grid reference J20.

For directions it will be easier to follow chancellors drive until you reach the gap between buildings 9 and 10. Then walk towards the Norwich Business School housed in Building 9. (Norwich Business School also occupy building 52 which makes it a bit confusing). If you have any questions please message me

I only need VB2010, blender, gimp and perhaps inkscape really, it's nice to have the luxury of amazing spec rigs but it's not necessary :)

Just a note to add. Apparently not so clearly detailed on the description, but where I say starts Saturday at 10:00 and finishes on Sunday at 17:00, we aren't to stay overnight. It's 10:00-17:00 both days. So whether there are group members with sofas to crash on or people who need somewhere to stay then just post to the comments. Sorry for any confusion. Hopefully you'll all still be able to make it.

So the building will be closed off from 5 yes? So not even a nice comfortable floor?

I would imagine so! Sometimes I can't even access places on a weekend if I were to go in and I'm a student there!

Updated details here now, the page is being distributed to the students on Tuesday so hopefully you can get in now before the spaces fill up. Any questions please don't hesitate to contact me.

As I don't code, I could always sit there and draw stuff I guess lol

Check out the "discussions" section on the meetup page. I left a load of helpful links. The first link takes you too a bunch of software you can use to make games without the need to code. GameMaker, Stencyl and Construct are pretty good! Follow the simple tutorials to the "drag and drop" way to make games!
