Santa Rosa Contra Dance (preceded by a free lesson)

Shorter autumn days cutting into your exercise?   Let the sun set early.    Get moving with Whimsical with Chuck Galt at the Santa Rosa Contra dance this Friday.   Yes.  Chuck Galt is our caller and Whimsical is our band.  Whimsical is Debra Tayleur  (piano), Janette Duncan (fiddle), Regan Hemphill (fiddle); Beth Christiansen (cello); Roxanne Oliva (accordion).  Enjoy the creative calling, the free flowing music and the 300 calories an hour melting away.

I found this picture of Chuck Galt online.  We know him as a friendly caller and a mild mannered professor.  Does he have another identitiy?  Come to the dance Friday and find out.

Contra dancing focuses on pattern, flow and rhythm. It's energetic, so wear loose, comfortable clothes and low, smooth-soled shoes that will stay on your feet (not sandals or running shoes). Beginners are welcome! Please join us for a free lesson a half hour before the dance begins to learn the basic moves. You can come alone or with a partner — our dances are friendly and inclusive, and you’ll probably end up dancing with most of the people in the hall.

Remember: “if you can walk you can do this form of dance.”

Door: $12 adults, $10 NBCDS members, $7 adults under 25/FT students with ID/financial hardship, $2 ages 6–17, under 6 free.

Info: www.nbcds.org

NOTE: Please help NBCDS conserve resources by bringing your own water bottles/mugs to dances. Scent-free dancing is greatly appreciated as many have severe allergies. Parents, all non–dancing children must be supervised.

About Our Dances: Contra and English Country Dance (ECD) are fun, easy to learn, and accompanied by live music. Before each dance, the caller teaches the dance and continues to prompt dancers as needed once the band starts. Because the pattern of moves is repeated often, you learn quickly. Very little footwork is required — just a smooth walking step. Contra dance music features fantastic fiddle tunes, driving Celtic rhythms, Cajun, old-timey and sometimes dashes of Eastern-European and swing. English Country dance music features lively jigs and reels, lyrical triple-time melodies and waltzes.

This dance is sponsored by the North Bay Country Dance Society, a non-profit organization that promotes and produces American and English Country Dance folk and ritual dancing, music and song in the Wine Country north of San Francisco (Sonoma & Marin counties) since 1992. www.nbcds.org

Whimsical was really in top form yesterday. Chuck Galt and the dancers brought good energy to the dance floor. A fun evening and the new dancers were great!

Looking very much forward to working (if you can call it that!) with Whimsical for the first time! And I do have numerous John Galt's in my past -- Uncle, Grand Uncle, Great Great Grandfather, etc. See you there! By the way, we aim to play a Zwiefacher, for those who remember them from Seth Tepfer's workshop at Faultline Frolic a couple of years ago... Brush of your Lederhosen!
