Petaluma Contra Dance Preceded by a Free Lesson

Come up to the farm in Petaluma  this first Sunday in August.  No.  Not the chicken farm and not the dairy farm (although Petaluma is known for its butter and eggs).  Come and join us for a good old fashioned contra dance with Swing Farm.  Swing Farm is Ray Bierl (fiddle):Charlie Hancock (piano); and
Markie Sanders (bass)
This well loved local band combines traditional and jazz stylings to weave an evening of fluid beauty and foot stomping excitement.   They will be joined by equally well loved local boy Mike Fynan who will call his usual mixture of old favorites and his own inventive twists on old favorites.

Time: 6:30-9:30 pm Dance, 6 pm Beginners Lesson

Contra dance focuses  on pattern, flow and rhythm. It's energetic, so wear loose, comfortable clothes and low, smooth-soled shoes that will stay on your feet (not sandals or running shoes). Beginners are welcome! Please join us for a free lesson a half hour before the dance begins to learn the basic moves. You can come alone or with a partner — our dances are friendly and inclusive, and you’ll probably end up dancing with most of the people in the hall. Free lesson at 6:00.

Remember: “if you can walk you can do this form of dance.”

Door: $12 adults, $10 NBCDS members, $7 adults under 25/FT students with ID/financial hardship, $2 ages 6–17, under 6 free. Free lesson at 7:30.

NOTE: Please help NBCDS conserve resources by bringing your own water bottles/mugs to dances. Scent-free dancing is greatly appreciated as many have severe allergies. Parents, all non–dancing children must be supervised.

About Our Dances: Contra and English Country Dance (ECD) are fun, easy to learn, and accompanied by live music. Before each dance, the caller teaches the dance and continues to prompt dancers as needed once the band starts. Because the pattern of moves is repeated often, you learn quickly. Very little footwork is required — just a smooth walking step. Contra dance music features fantastic fiddle tunes, driving Celtic rhythms, Cajun, old-timey and sometimes dashes of Eastern-European and swing. English Country dance music features lively jigs and reels, lyrical triple-time melodies and waltzes.

I decided to start Reno Motorcycle Riders Group because I wanted to be part of a group of people who enjoyed my passion... I was excited and nervous. Our group has grown by leaps and bounds. I never thought it would be this big.
