Jenner Evening Kayak BioPlankton and Meteor Shower Tour

I've talked to some of you about doing a moonless night kayak trip and seeing the bioluminescent plankton during the summer months. WaterTreks in Jenner does one with the Perseids Meteor Shower!

The price is $60 per person, $35 if you use your own kayak.

We will meet in Jenner at 6:30pm and get back to the dock by 11pm.  If you want to carpool from Santa Rosa, meet at "The Locals" restaurant (90 Mark West Springs Rd.) and be ready to leave there at 5:30.  There is ample parking along the back fence.

The tour includes a stop for a hot beverage and snacks.

We will view wildlife in the estuary followed by frolicking in their eerie blue/green glow.

On the most intense nights you can see the trails of fish, harbor seals and other estuary life moving in the water as well as glowing water everywhere you touch. Sometimes we even have glowing ghost seals.

Participants must call WaterTreks to register at[masked]-2249.

See www.watertreks.com for more information.

PFDs supplied, dress in layers and wear water sandals or boat shoes (NO FLIP-FLOPS).

Perhaps organize one with Water Treks again at Jenner, or the other company that does Tomales Bay. I'm happy to help organize it.

    Maybe, where? when?

Would anyone like to do this again this year ? 2014 ?

  • Linda S.

I suggested a trip to Tomales Bay for Saturday afternoon/evening, but it says that I have to get 2 more rsvps before it will be posted -- but how do I get those if it is not posted?
It is for tomorrow! Help me understand how this works.
    Thanks,
    Linda

I had the same issue, I think it is something that the original organizers of the group have control of.

It's kinda weird. On the right hand side of the page you should see a red block that says "Announce". If you click on that it overrides the "2 more RSVPs needed" and sends the announcement out. I just did that.

If anyone is interested in going to Tomales Bay, I can carry 5 boats on top of my car, that is 4 extra and one for me.
How long does the Biolum last?? Just this week?

    Thanks again Joya!! Very fun

    I posted my photos. Enjoy.

Sorry about the delay in getting on the water. I think WaterTreks is not accustomed to having such a large group on the water at night, seems like they would have done better with a group of about 5 boats. But Suki was great at finding good areas of bioluminescence, it takes experience to do that. And she knows the behavior of the estuary and kept us safe from being swept out to sea with the tide.

With the fresh water coming in from the Russian River, the bioplankton get diluted, this does not happen in Tomales Bay, so the "sparkles" were awesome and everywhere. I went with a Point Reyes Outdoors tour a few weeks ago for their biolum tour and they were very organized and managed two groups on the water well with knowledgeable and personable guides. It was $90 per person and you had to use their boats--tandem, sit inside, with rudders. They supplied spray skirts and windbreakers.

Great night on the water, with a great group of people. Can't ask for more than that. Thank you Joy for organizing it and it was nice meeting all of you.

I lost a pair of shorts last night, black hydroskin size xxl. Pretty sure I left them on the table in the parking lot. If anyone has them please let me know, and I will make arrangements to retrieve them. Other than that, good time, and nice to meet you all.

I'd love to carpool, if anyone is going from Petaluma, Rohnert Park Cotati or the park and Ride at River Road. I can take riders,or ride along. I won't be bringing a kayak.

Can't make this trip as I just found out about your group today but I will keep in touch and try to go on one soon. BTW I am the only female in my profile picture, the rest are family after our last dive.

Hi PJ--Welcome! Love the pic, great-looking family and dive location. Hope to Meetup with you soon.

We have a couple of new RSVPs, welcome Debra and John! Hope you have each called WaterTreks and made your reservations. Are you interested in carpooling, from Santa Rosa?

Hello! Watertreks says they are out of single kayak rentals, but they have a few doubles still. Anyone intersted in doubling up? I am a newbie, never kayaked before.

I just called and yes they want us there at 6:30 so we move up leave time to 5:30 pm from "locals" carpool site .

    August 10, 2013

  • deb

I was told by the folks in Jenner to be there at 630. I think we need to meet to eat much earlier

    August 10, 2013

    • Joya H

I agree, should leave "The Locals" at 5:30. 4 is good if you are eating there.

      August 10, 2013

  • hollie

ok so I am still not sure where we are at re car pooling; joya sent msg re location to meet in Santa Rosa: "The Locals" restaurant at the corner of Mark West Springs Rd and Mendocino Ave. There is good parking along the fence behind that little shopping area. It is convenient to River Rd which will take you to Jenner." Could everyone who wants to carpool meet there and we divide up seats and go ??? at 6pm ? Maybe even Susan from Sebastopol could come there if there is enough parking ? What does everyone think ?

    August 8, 2013

    • Joya H

Who else wants to carpool from Santa Rosa? Are you able to meet at "The Locals" at Mark West and Mendo? If you are able to take riders, let us know. Anybody else looking for a ride from someplace besides Santa Rosa and not arranged transportation? I would suggest giving yourself at least another 15 minutes to allow for whatever.

      August 9, 2013

    • hollie

oops posted above, should have followed thread here. will meet you at Locals at 6pm.

      August 9, 2013

  • hollie

Hi Joanne , yes I'll met you at 6pm ready to go at "The locals"; I am renting a kayak ,so just bringing my body and mind with me.

    August 9, 2013

  • Joya H

Sounds like most of you are bringing your own boat and have made reservations with WaterTreks. They are predicting clear skies for the meteor shower and calm water with lots of interesting plankton activity. Remember to dress in layers, wear appropriate footwear and bring your fun-loving spirit.

I'll be leaving from "The Locals" early, about 5:30, to get to the Jenner boat launch. You can reach me on my cell,[masked], on that day. Email is the best way to contact me, though.

Looking forward to meeting you all and experiencing this evening on the water!

  • Susan S.

    Anyone else leaving from Sebastopol?

    August 7, 2013

    • Joanne

Susan, I've tried returning your call. no answer/no VM. Please call me again.

      August 8, 2013

    • Joya H

Hi Joanne and Susan--Hope you gals are able to connect and work out the carpooling. Thanks Joanne for helping Joie and Amy get out to Jenner, too. I will be carpooling from The Locals but I will be leaving a bit earlier (about 5:30) so my friend can get situated at the launch point with his kayak. My cell is (707)[masked]

I live in Santa Rosa JC ( moved from Sebastopol). I have an SUV, am taking my own kayak & I can take other riders. We could tie on another kayak.

Hi--Hope everyone is ready for a great night of paddling in Jenner on Sunday. How are the carpooling plans working for folks? Anybody still need a plan for that?

New to the group. I look forward to meeting new people!

I will probably be on the river that evening, but I cannot afford to pay someone to let me use my own kayak in a place where I kayak for free all of the time. --

    1 · August 2, 2013

  • Joya H

With the RSVPs so far (10+), we should be able to get the $60-70/person rate and $20 less if bringing your own kayak. WaterTreks has issues with inflatables, so talk to them to make sure they are okay with yours. You might need to be persistent in calling before getting a live person on the phone, they will be busy this weekend, I'm sure.

    August 2, 2013

  • Joya H

Yes, carpooling is encouraged. I suggest one of the meeting up places be the River Road Park and Ride.

    August 2, 2013

  • Bob M.

This should be fun! I will bring my own kayak.

    August 2, 2013

I just talked with Sarah at WaterTrek. They are expecting a very calm evening on the water, easy paddling, about 2 hours total. Just make sure to dress in layers.

    August 2, 2013

  • hollie

Pretty sure i am game for this; not sure how far group goes or how hard the paddle trip is.
