Jenner for New Year's Day

Jenner is an easy put in and take out. Meet about 2 pm. (after a SWAG hike at Bodega) We can paddle around the island then over to the beach for walking and a picnic. When we are done, we can go next door to Cafe Aquatica for clam chowder. I need to know how many people want chowder so that she can make an extra pot for us. River's End only has mushroom soup, and they do not have any space for a large group, reservations are required, and they do not do take out.

Had a wonderful time. Thank you Linda for posting this trip and making it compatible with the SWAG hike. Enjoyed seeing everyone. We need to keep doing this as long as the weather holds. ;)

I have never paddle / launched from Jenner. Is it suitable for a sit on top kayak?

    December 30, 2013

    • Deb

I am in a sit on top and am banking heavily on Stillwater Cove living up to it's name. Wind is great about half the time and a pain the other half.

Hi Deb, Good thing I took a map with me 'cuz it weren't Stillwater Cove. Had my wires crossed.

Weather for January was incredible - sunny with just a tough of coolness in the air. My face is sunburned. The water was calm with no current. 3 of us even went out at sunset and paddled back under the stars. The clam chowder at the Cafe was not as good as River's End, but with a large group, this was our only option. Next time is we finish early we could drive back down to Bodega Bay for some chowder there.

Thanks to Linda for her zest in organizing this event.
And also thanks for bringing extra kayaks to help empower the few of us less-fortunate to kayak !!

    Was a nice day.
The sun was in my eyes part of the time, but everything was beautiful and refreshing.
Interesting to get a new perspective of Jenner.

Linda, thank you so much for bringing an extra kayak and PFD for me. I had a fantastic time in the water and really enjoyed meeting everybody. I'm looking forward to the next event (where someone can loan a kayak again!) FUN FUN : )

Wow all I can say is I am glad I went. The weather and the "lagoon" were fantastic. I will sure do this again.

It was a wonderful experience! It was a calm, sunny day out at Jenner. I met some really nice
people, and saw some beautiful scenery. A great way to start the new year! That's Linda, for organizing this!

My girl and I most likely will not be able to make it today. We may shoot out to the coast later and check all all the 'yaks in the Estuary tho. Happy New Year, and have fun!

It would be nice to get a consolidated count of who needs to borrow a boat/PFD so we know how many to bring.

    December 31, 2013

    • Deb

I have an extra pfd in size large with cinches. I'll bring it.

      January 1, 2014

    • Carl H. I.

How can I say this without sounding too snarky. I'll bring an extra boat if asked, but I don't feel it's my job to call people and ask if they want a boat. If you haven't confirmed that you want a boat, speak now or learn long distance dog paddling.

Cafe Aquatica has clam chowder. They need an approximate head count to prepare for us. Please reply directly under this post to tell me who wants chowder. (River's End only has mushroom soup, you need dinner reservations, and they cannot take such a large group.)

    December 31, 2013

    • Deb

Sign me up, please. Chowder for one.

Quoting the original post, "When we are done, we can go up to River's End and have some crab chowder." end quote Has our group split off for clam chowder at the dock? I am for Rivers End! A nice refresh before my long drive. Anyone else confused?

    December 31, 2013

    • Linda S.

Deb - I called River's End - they are open for reservations and our group has grown too large for them. Also, they have changed to serving mushroom soup right now instead of the chowders that they usually have. They are the ones that directed us to Cafe Aquatica for clam chowder. It is right next to the boat ramp.

Hi Linda, yes, I'll arrive with Siew Chin.
I wear a small PFD if you have that size, or medium could hopefully be cinched tight enough. YES ! Clam chowder at Cafe Aquatica sounds wonderful.
I love their coffee drinks !

Hi there. I'm Sarah Stiles' friend. Sorry to join this so late. I am interested to jump in on this as well, if there's still a kayak left. I also don't have a PFD. I'll be checking this post regularly today for replies. Thanks!

    Attention: Food??
Sounds like quite a group! Cafe Aquatica is next door to our put-in. They serve a clam chowder at $7.50 and they are open until 5 pm. If you are sure that you would like some chowder after our paddle -- reply to this note so that I can give them a count, then they can make an extra pot of chowder for our group. I did not organize any food for this trip, as kayakers tend to be an independent group, bringing their own snacks,- but I am bringing Rice Krispie treats. Optional only: something to share, not required. ** Remember to wear layers, and to bring extra clothing -- just in case.
I am bringing extra kayaks & PFDs for Dana, Sarah & her friend Slew Chin Chua. I am looking forward to seeing everyone to celebrate the New Year.
Have a Happy New Year's Eve tonight. See you at 2 pm at the Jenner boat ramp.

I am looking forward to seeing you again, Linda, and to kayaking around Penny Island if conditions are favorable!!! It will be grand to meet the rest who are coming. I will bring my own kayak and gear!!!

    December 28, 2013

  • Dana K.

Hi everybody! I joined this group to get out, have fun and meet people, and because I had been kayaking in the bay a handful of times and loved it. Then I realized that I probably needed my own kayak!!! I don't have one and so haven't participated in any of these "meet up" events, but it sounds like there may be extra kayaks at this event? If someone could confirm the possibility of my borrowing a kayak at Jenner on Wednesday, I'd love to come. Thank you :)

Oh, I forgot to mention - for winter paddling, dress in layers, and wear a hat that will keep your head warm.
. If you have polypropalene or silk long underwear, then a wool shirt and or a fleece, with a wind-breaker. If you have paddling gloves or light weight diving gloves, it protects your hands from windchill. - Also, I bought myself a pair of neoprene booties -- and they are well worth the investment. When your feet get wet, they are cold - but not freezing.
Also---I can help people get in and out of their boats to keep their feet dry -- you just have to be patient and wait for me to get out of mine first.
I am looking forward to this. I hope the weather co-operates.
Is anyone else going to hike Bodega Head with Senior Walkabouters?

Sounds so fun! I use the sit-on-top kayaks at Sea Trek and took my 101 Sea Kayak class. Would I rent and bring, (good excuse for getting the kayak roof top addition), and/or what kind of kayak and/or can one rent there?

    • Linda S.

There is not a "rental" at Jenner. The company that works out of there does "guided" tours that can be expensive. Deb will be using one of my extras, you can reserve the other if you would like to . Do you have your own life jacket? --- We do not go out into the ocean, we just stay in the sort of lagoon at the mouth.
