Paddle With A Park Ranger At Lake Berryessa - Oak Shores

____  UPDATE:   3/14/14 ________

I, (Deb Turner) have updated the map that shows the entrance to the parking area and the launch site.  It is at: https://maps.google.com/maps?saddr=5420+Berryessa+Knoxville+Rd&daddr=38.557818+-122.232262&hl=en&ll=38.554676,-122.2229&spn=0.019834,0.042272&sll=38.556623,-122.232728&sspn=0.009917,0.021136&geocode=FdFgTAIdzNe2-ClfIL6aRfqEgDG-PHUHJeQEZQ%3BFXpYTAIdOuK2-A&t=h&z=15

Note: Not sure if Victoria will be leading the paddle tomorrow or not.  She is sorry that she hasn't gotten back to everyone about questions but she has been sick the last few days.  The paddle is still on.  There will be a couple of other rangers leading us.  Get well soon, Victoria.  Hope we'll see you on the next paddle adventure.  Deb T.

Come enjoy Lake Berryessa from a unique perspective on a ranger-led paddling tour. Each tour offers a different experience as we launch from various areas around the lake.

For our first tour of 2014, we will be exploring the islands of Lake Berryessa - Goat Island, Big Island, and Small Island.  We hope to see the Bald Eagles and Ospreys.  While we are hoping for some BIG RAINS between now and then, it isn't likely that the lake level will rise much - prepare for a bit of a trek down to the water (not too steep). We are meeting in Foxtail Flat in Oak Shores. There is no fee to park or launch, but please be aware that no trailers are allowed in the park.

The fine print: Events occur rain or shine, but high winds could cause an event to be cancelled. Heavy spring rains may change certain launch locations. Paddling outings are open to experienced swimmers with a kayak, canoe or other non-motorized boat. Coast Guard-approved life jackets will be available, but boats will not be available for rent. Participants should bring their boat, life jacket, paddle, sunscreen, hat, water, clothing layers depending on the weather and a lunch/snack. Pre-registration is required, and space is limited. For details and directions, please contact Park Ranger Victoria Payan at[masked] ext. 113 or [masked].

Unfortunately, RSVPing on this site isn't enough to secure a spot. Please send me a quick email at [masked] in order to RSVP. Thank you!

Just for the RECORD to clarify. I, Cathleen Cannon, will always bring her own boat. I own a Sea Kayak and a River/lake kayak. I was thanking Phil for the directions to Foxtail Flat.

Hey y'all, sorry for the lack of communication on my part this week. I've been home at sick with the crud - there is a (very) good chance Ranger Todd will be leading this trip along with our newest ranger, Alicia. For those of you asking about directions, Phil is right - once you find Oak Shores, you've basically found Foxtail Flat. It is the main parking area when you turn right inside the gate. Have fun!

If you can find Oak Shores, you'll find Foxtail Flat. Drive along the west side of the lake and you can't miss it.

I would love to go out on this paddle, but I'm in need of a kayak. If anyone has one to loan me for the trip, I will be incredibly thankful. Please let me know. Thank you!

The map is great and so are the directions!!! I am just wondering where in Oak Shores is Foxtail Flat? We are meeting in Foxtail Flat according to the above directions. (and btw is there a bathroom nearby?)

The map link above shows where Oak Shores is on the lake.

Could someone give me detailed directions as to the location of the launch spot? I see the general directions as how to get to the Lake but where is the launch spot?

I emailed the woman who is guiding our group. I too need directions to where we are meeting. I've been to the lake but unaware of where we are putting in at location.

      March 13, 2014

  • Chris

Sounds like I can use either one. I'm fine with that. Farrah you can use either one, and we can switch back and forth if one doesn't suit you.

    Looking forward to this paddle.

Chris I will be there Saturday morning with bells on :-) I don't have a life jacket, so if there are any extras I would be much obliged!

      March 11, 2014

    • Chris

Not a problem. I'll bring an extra kayak and life jacket.

Hi, Anyone in Santa Rosa like to "commute"? I have kayak, jacket AND a paddle. Not bad for a blonde, eh? Are we gonna get wet?

    March 11, 2014

    • Phil B.

I'll probably come paddle with you folks and I can bring a spare kayak and set of gear- I'll confirm Friday. If I don't make it, head south on Hwy29 from Calistoga. Before you get to St. Helena, turn left on Deer Park Rd. just after Markham Winery. Follow Deer Park up through Angwin and down the steep hill after (be sure to downshift to save your brakes). At the bottom of the hill is Pope Valley and a "Y" intersection at the garage. Bear right about half a mile and the first left is Barnett Rd. About a mile down Barnett you'll go past a pond; just beyond is our driveway. There's a gate but just push the button on the post. My number is[masked] or[masked]

Thanks Phil - that would be great. I'll wait to hear from you on Friday.

Does anyone have a kayak I may use? Deb, I believe you may have said you have extra boats at the USCC paddlesport safety course.

Thank you Phil. I think Chris is bringing one I may use, but if not I will need to use someones. Thank you everyone for being kind to the new kid on the block:-)

Hi Phil, I would love to borrow a kayak. I can pick one up on the way if it will fit into the back of my prius. I have a hatchback. I would also need a paddle. You can reach me at[masked] or [masked] - thanks!

      March 11, 2014

  • Debora H.

I also need a kayak - I have e-mailed Deb (the other Deb) and haven't heard back from her. If this is going to be a really demanding paddle, I may have to bow out. I'm a little out of practice.

We try to keep it at an easy pace in easy waters. Our plan is to cross part of the main body of the lake to Goat Island, then cross the main body again to Big Island and explore the channels there. However, there are several fishing tournaments that day and if the water seems choppy or it seems too strenuous we will stick to the channels.

If no one has one for you, Farrah I can bring another. But I have a question. I have a 10' sit in and 13' sit on top. I'm thinking of bringing the 13' sit on top for this big water.

Thank you Chris :-) I have never used a kayak, sit in or top. I was looking at buying an 8' sit-in, but trying out a top seated kayak may just be the right time to try. Because I've canoed a lot on Ozark waterways, I have the endurance for the sport, but does anyone have concerns about a top seated kayak for a first run?
