51st NBPA Paintout - Tara Firma Farms

We will be painting at Tara Firma Farms on beautiful San Antonio Road! Thanks to Gerald and Paula Alsterlind, we were able to coordinate a meet-up here at the farm. Beautiful rolling hills with oak along the Sonoma-Marin border, prototypical pastoral scenery that should be inspiring to all who love painting our local scenery! Also, if you are interested in learning about their sustainable organic livestock farming operation, they are very enthusiastic educators. We are very much looking forward to it!

I adore this weather, had boots & gaiters ready, but came down with some virus. Another time….hopefully some die-hards out there, eh, Gerald?

The weather gods were on our side! Lucked out with a clear day. I counted 18 painters, I'm sure there were a few more up on the hillside. Hope you feel better :)

I was pleased I finally decided to go after saying I wasn't going. Get there in time for a noon tour. Weather was gorgeous. Nice to meet Greg who came by and introduced himself to the painters.

This was such an amazing day! The weather was windy but dry. There were countless beautiful spots to choose between. Thank you!

So glad you all had a great day. I almost changed my plan and came but alas didn't. I plan to go on my own there soon. It IS a great place to paint. Onward to more sunshine and more painting.

Be there around 1pm and will attend 2pm tour with son. Alan Mart is almost there now- was having trouble finding location but he has their phone number.

I am on my way now with my 12 year old son. Akan Mart is on his way now as well. It's 12:09 pm as I write this, so I will plan for the 2pm tour.

I agree with Char. I'll try again next time. Have fun.

Doesn't look like a good day to paint there what with all of the mud and dicey weather, and I'm showing my house at noon, so have fun.

    April 27, 2014

  • Gerald

Conituous drizzle this morning. May attend the noon tour. Drive safe!

I will make it to the farm another time. I know the terrain and I don't feel like lugging through the mud unless you paint in the parking lot. They are really user friendly there. Also, Nancy Thomson and I will not be there today but have a beautiful paint out. The tour is great and their meats, produce and attitude is the best. Later...

I'll be there for the 10 Am tour. I have tickets for a concert in Santa Rosa that afternoon, so I have to leave around noon. I usually bring my little dog every where so let me know if that is a problem.

I just called the farm and there is no problem with my plan so I'll see you out there en plein air.

Considering morning rain, could I catch the noon tour and paint in the afternoon, joining the group at 2:30 and then returning to my easel?

    April 26, 2014

  • Amy S.

I agree about that turn from 101 onto San Antonio. I've never done plein air, but I goes you have to start sometime.

Looks good, was just driving past there the other day thinking it would be good to paint west around there while it's lush. Chance of morning sprinkles makes it even more attractive….yay for rain n' fog.

Wish I could make it. It is a great place to visit!

Thanks so much for finalizing this wonderful site. I will definitely be there. For others, 2 things: firstly warning if you are coming from the south, the turn off from 101 is EXTREMELY DANGEROUS and should be taken with great patience. Traffic is coming from the north. Please be careful. Also, they WILL sell their fabulous meats, veggies, etc to the public. Bring some cold packs. See you all there. Paula

Hi. I live near here and want to say that turn off of 101 NB can be tough. I recommend going into Pet and coming south on I St.

Lot's of great suggestions! We've also received a few more emailed suggestions we're currently looking into. Once we get confirmation from property manager we'll post location asap! Thanks for your patience :)

How about Stinson Beach? There is a large parking lot with picnic benches and a hamburger and ice cream stand close by.

I like the idea of the Marin Headlands. There are some great sites there, one being Rodeo Beach. There is also the Tennessee Valley Trail, which is gorgeous, though a good mile walk out to the best painting sites. I love painting anywhere paintable in Marin or Sonoma counties.

Let me know if you'd like to see photos or paintings of this location!

This might be going a bit into unknown territory for those in Marin, but I'm very fond of painting at Pt Pinole Regional Park in the East Bay. The park is comprised of a small peninsula which juts out into the bay, with meadow, forest, pond, beach and marsh. It's just a bit north of the Richmond Bridge, East Bay side, along the Great Highway. The park rangers are fond of painters and have often driven me and my gear to sites I choose within the park, in their shuttle van service, with trailer, free for those over 62, a dollar for younger folk. Even without the shuttle, the park is quite walkable with small changes in elevation, fire trails and some paved paths.

Hi Gerald, It's fine if you post The Art on the Farm meet up for NBPA for May. We can't control the dates too much, as they are dictated by the farmers/producers availability. What we get is what we get. Thank you!

    April 21, 2014

  • Matt L.

you prolly did this already, but marin headlands (particularly the beach area hiking trails), just a suggestion

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
