Point Reyes Landscapes: en Plein Air (Mike Bailey Workshop)

Celebrate the iconic landscapes and seascapes of Point Reyes National Seashore with renowned watercolor artist Mike Bailey. Start each morning braving the seashore’s smarting air and catching Summer sunlight as it begins to rise in the East and hit the land and ocean literally at the edge of the world. Mike will be there working en plein air with the class to capture the aura and beauty of Point Reyes onto canvas. The class will visit outdoor locations throughout the park, to paint and explore ,and then retreat back to a studio environment for finishing and critique. Mike is an exciting and energetic teacher with a bold sense of humor and a knack for making any workshop fun. Accommodations included at the Historic Lifeboat Station.

It was terrific. Lots to paint and got better at "greys."

Hi- I understand that these classes help fund important causes, however, does this mean this group will ONLY be holding expensive events like this?
This isn't what I think of as a regular type of Meetup- I'm a member of many groups in the Bay Area and San Diego and the general concensus seems to be that they are an inexpensive way to get out and do things together, not an inexpensive way to promote a pricey event. I was actually shocked when I read the fine print on the first event saying the price- it wasn't on the first page. I wonder if people showed up and were surprised?
If this is the only type of event this group will be having I will drop out, since I'm not interested in this type of expensive class - those, I can find elsewhere.
Honestly, I'm a bit disappointed because I was really hoping to get together and do some Plein air painting with other artists in Marin on a regular basis. Perhaps some of us should start another group, if there are enough people interested.

Hi Carol - Thanks for you comment and concern about pricing of workshops offered through Point Reyes Field Institute. North Bay Plein air offers many wonderful free paint outs and gatherings throughout the year. Point Reyes Field Institute is a sponsor of this MeetUp, and we occasionally post some of our fee based workshops to try and gather some interest in our classes. The majority of MeetUps you will find on this page are free, or ask for a small donation, and are not through Point Reyes.

Hi Carol, these are just extra outings that the Point Reyes Field Institute (our sponsor) has created. We will still continue to do our normal monthly meet-ups.

I changed the title, I think some people are unclear that it was a workshop and not a normal NBPA outing.

I am confused as Meetup's are always free. I think it is a good idea to have access to Point Reyes for our monthly free outings but to begin charging for a Meetups is a change I do not understand? Have I missed something?

Hi Laura, I agree multiday art workshops are very expensive and a big investment for most people. But the price is inline with other similar institutions. http://www.sacfineart...

Hi Donna, these workshops are a supplement to the normal NBPA meetups and NOT a replacement to the normal free outings.

Hi. This date is coming up soon. How many have signed up? I forget - is there a way to refrigerate food and or cook.
I hear some of the concerns, but can't imagine that this is anything more than a one-time or infrequent event. Getting to stay in the historic building is intriguing. It would be nice to hear / read what others have thought of it. Is there such a link.
Faye's suggestion has merit - to do this for a day and see how it works. I am still in, but don't see that anyonelse has signed on.
    Pls advise. Thanks.

Hi Pat - To stay at the Historic Lifeboat Station is a very special experience. It is the only Marine rail system on the west coast and to be able to spend the night inside the park, on Drakes Bay is very rare. The only way people can stay at this building is through the Point Reyes Field Institute. There are currently 8 people signed up for this class, and it is a go. Most people who sign up do it through our website and do not respond through MeetUp. http://www.ptreyes.or...

We are working on our facilities page, but currently this is all the information we have online about the Historic Lifeboat Station. http://www.ptreyes.or...

I rolled over to this meetup group from Art on the Farm. The current upcoming workshops are the first I have seen with a high fee. So I am interested in the answer to Carol's question about whether this means that only this type of meetup will be offered in the future by this group.

As far as these workshops, I really would like to paint at Point Reyes and do not mind contributing. The issues I have are with the accommodations and schedule. I live in San Francisco and to start a workshop at 6 pm on a Friday means I have to drive through the horrible Friday night commute, which is a negative for me. I would prefer to get up very early Saturday morning for the drive. The second issue is bringing sheets, towels, food, and all the painting gear. Before I go through this big effort, I would like to try it. Why not offer a one day workshop, so people can get a taste of what it would be like. Or a two day, with an option to attend only one day.

Hi Faye - Hopefully I have answered some of your questions below. Point Reyes Field Institute offers many (cheaper) one day classes as well as our (more expensive) multi-day workshops. We would really like to provide a more inclusive service at the Lifeboat station that includes food and linens but to do that we would have to charge a lot more than we already do for our classes. The Lifeboat Station is a very special place and part of the magic about the location is that it is so far removed and remote. You can find our full listing of art workshops listed here: http://www.ptreyes.or...

how many do you need to make this a go?
Did I also see an 8/22 date mentioned?

I could not find out anything about the accommodations on line. Are these private rooms with private baths? Some description please. Also, I assume there are facilities to buy food for the outings, correct?

Sorry, more questions. Does this mean we bring our own towels and sheets?

      August 4

    • Point Reyes Field I.

Questions are good! Yes, people should bring their own towels, we recommend bringing a sleeping bag to place on top of the mattress, but sheets would work as well.

What does the $320 pay for?

    July 31

    • Point Reyes Field I.

Hi Janet - The $320 pays for the instructor time, lodging at the Historic Lifeboat Station and helps raise funds for our environmental programs.

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
