Is Self-Sufficiency a Prerequisite to Loving?

  • Nov 17, 2012 · 10:00 AM
  • This location is shown only to members

Conventional wisdom tells us: 'we can't truly love anyone else, unless we are first independent and complete within ourselves'. Psychologists often agree with that idea one minute, then the next minute they say: 'a deep bond with another person is such a fundamental human need that we can not be emotionally whole and healthy without it'. How can we reconcile those two assertions?

Please arrive between 10:00 and 10:30 a.m. for no-host refreshments and socializing so we can begin the group discussion at 10:30.  It is totally optional, but at least some of us will be staying for lunch after the group discussion.

Well worth attending. Steve is a great facilitator! The members were all interesting and varied in their perspectives and contributions. I left feeling extremely good about being a seeker and insatiable reader of great books. Thanks to Steve and everybody!

I'm follow you all with interest. Unfortunately I just joined a class which meets at the same time as you all do, so for now I'll have to be an eavesdropper.

It is a bit of a paradox that we must learn to embrace and abide. Brings to mind the symbol of the liminal, the two circles intersecting, representing two opposites. The area in the middle, where they over
