WINGS Seminar Schedule
6:30 p.m. - 7: 15 p.m. Automated Flight Service Station (AFSS) Overview and the NEW Pilot Web Portal, by Bill Hall and Dennis Harlow from the RDU AFSS. Wouldn't it be great if you could see the weather charts that the AFSS briefing is describing to you on the phone? Great news, you can do this now through the new pilot web portal services offered by the AFSS. That's right, as you speak with the briefer on the phone, you can view the same weather charts for a truly interactive briefing.   7:30 p.m. - 8:00 p.m. RNAV Approach Survival Guide, by Jim "JR" Rary, RDU ATCT. RNAV Approach procedures have changed to allow quicker, more efficient routing for approaches. JR takes you through these updates and offer general tips on understanding what happens behind the scenes with regards to instrument approaches.   8:00 p.m. - 8:30 p.m. Pilot and Aircraft Performance, by Tom Freeman, NCDOT Aviation Safety Specialist. The analysis of any flight should include both the performance parameters of the aircraft and the capabilities of the pilot. The net effect is the ability for the pilot to plan a successful flight with a good margin of safety built in. This interactive presentation uses “real life” video scenarios with associated risk factors and opportunities to increase safety.
Tom will also discuss the techniques that can be used to maximize pilot proficiency in the shortest, most efficient amount of time. Concluding the presentation is an open discussion on the high number of landing accidents in 2012. Out of the total of 27 accidents, 12 were landing accidents (NTSB final and preliminary reports).
