I liked the constant steady temperature of L.A. I liked the energy of the city itself and the fact that the city never slept! There's lots to see and do. Like Houston, L.A. is a car culture - people drive EVERYWHERE they go. I didn't like the traffic - overall the drivers there are worse than Houston's (IMHO, I was driving a truck at the time). There is constant truck traffic at all hours of the day. I didn't like the Santa Anna winds. Being an asthmatic, I didn't like the pollution, especially in the mornings. I did like driving through the mountains everywhere! I also liked that every little city kind of had it's own unique signature, they weren't just some place you pass through.
I have to agree with Judi about the sweet hay smell. Maybe that was the north winds bringing air from the farmlands in central California.

I wish you well! I went to LA once in June. It gets hot but there's not near the humidity factor of Houston. In a way I wish I were going.
The one thing that was weird to me as an East coaster was that the Atlantic Ocean has a strong salt water smell. In LA it has the a sweet hay like smell. In my humble opinion.
Good luck! Keep in touch.

NHBG is looking for at least one other Organizer.
With the school year starting, Jhonna will be busy coordinating for her family. She has ~a full plate~ with her job; activities for her son, nephews and niece - martial arts; school band, chess tournaments. There is a family to manage, a house to run, elderly parents to take care of and friends to see. Gaming is a Hobby and just does not ~ never should - come before Family.
Hence, Saturday events will be put on her back burner, and no longer a priority to set-up.
If you are interested in contributing to this group, please step up as an Organizer.
