150TH ANNIVERSARY OF CIVIL WAR BATTLE
-150th Anniversary of Florida’s Largest Civil War Battle-

Olustee Battlefield Historic State Park, Florida’s first state park, will commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Civil War and host the 38th Annual Reenactment of the Battle of Olustee
February 14-16, 2014. Throughout the weekend, more than 2,000 demonstrators will present living history impressions of military and civilian life at the time of Florida’s largest Civil War battle.

The Battle of Olustee was fought on February 20, 1864. Full-scale artillery, mounted cavalry and three African American regiments, took part in the battle that ended with 2,807 casualties and a Confederate victory. The 54th Massachusetts was among the African American troops that fought at Olustee.

The living history weekend features the reenactment of the Battle of Olustee on Sunday at 1:30 p.m. Period music concerts and crafts, lectures, battlefield surgical practices and the lives of both white and black civilians during the war will be portrayed by re-enactors. Military camps and drills by infantry and artillery are scheduled throughout the weekend. Color ceremonies, cavalry, authentic camps, exhibits, food and much more!

Food concessions will be available.

I would like to be able to take pictures during the above schedule of these separate events but most important is to monitor the stands for seating area vacancy status as the reenactment gets closer. Any ideas how we can stay together or does it matter if we are all split over the stands? If some were in different stand areas as well as standing along fence if permitted then a variety of anlges and subjects would be captured. Some may wish to be moving and not stationaryas the battle progresses since the action begins at left and ends at right. Battle lasts a long time it seems as you experience the whole event.
The battle is fabulous and you will be close enough if in stands to capture nice images but need a zoom for closer and wider shots, keep shutter speed high enough to stop action unless you wish purposefully blurred shots. Need tripod when slow speed of course.

I think we can break up into small groups to get different photos. Then meet up at a designated location for those who rode together. It will be hard staying together in such a large crowd. My husband and I can't even stay together when we go out shooting on our own, lol

Ok for some of us meet at a designated area at the park?

    February 10

    • Debbie Bounds

There is also a set of railroad tracks that you have to cross entering the park. We will wait there once we arrive. Should be around 9:00-9:30 or so. Can't really give a definite time since we will have to take a shuttle bus from the parking lots. If you want to call or text me once you arrive we can probably get together better. [masked]

Having hosted a few meetups there for the Jacksonville Photography Meetup Group, I'd thought share some thoughts & suggestion I gave to the Gainesville group. There is a sign at the entrance to the park, that makes a good rally point. (https://upload.wikimedia.org/wik...)

There is also a set of railroad tracks that you have to cross entering the park that you can use as a rally point (they are both in the same area, so it works really either way).

Plan on getting to the Battlefield (not just in the park) at least an hour early and honestly 2 hours wouldn't be an unreasonable idea. Basically you want to pick your spot and sit on it. I believe this is the 150th anniversary so what is an already crowded event will probably be even more crowded. Once the battle starts moving around will be very difficult. Getting as close to the center (50 yd line so to speak) as possible is probably best but the Battle take place mostly on the right (east) side of the field so that ....
