North Jersey Python/Django Developers Group Message Board › hacking together a better Django starting point

hacking together a better Django starting point

I'm starting up yet another personal project with Django, and I'm realizing that Django out-of-the-box provides a lot of plumbing, but there are some higher-order things that are missing. For example, in order to get a simple registration workflow set up, I've already installed the django-registration and django-registration-defaults packages, plus I've had to grab jQuery and the Bootstrap stuff as well. While going through this, I have to remember every time, "where does the boostrap CSS go? How do I set the STATIC_DIRS and the TEMPLATE_DIRS...

I'm wondering if a good project for us would be to put together some kind of framework Django project that would include all this. Perhaps a pip requirements.txt to grab the things that you probably need, and maybe a cookbook of where to install the other stuff, and what has to match up in the settings file?

Sounds interesting and fills a need I have with my own Django on-boarding process. Since I'm just beginning a project, I have no problem writing down the pieces I have to get and the places I have to put them. What I won't be able to do well yet is the "Why" part, and the part about recognizing when I've made a mistake. If you're up for it, let's figure out a collaborative flow for working through this at Monday's meeting
