Weekend away - YHA Canterbury, Kent

YHA Canterbury is located on the 153 mile footpath of the North Downs Way from Farnham to Dover. On Saturday, there will be an opportunity to walk a 10 mile section of the North Downs Way/Pilgrims' Way into Canterbury. On Sunday, there would be the option of a shorter walk including part of the Crab and Winkle Way and returning via woodland and forest tracks. For the walks on Saturday and Sunday we plan to take a bus to the start of the walk. Alternatively, you could spend a day or two sight-seeing in the city.

Click here to go to the YHA web page for YHA Canterbury.

We travel to Canterbury on Friday evening and return on Sunday evening. Friday and Saturday nights at YHA Canterbury.

Accommodation cost is £14.015 per person per night so that's £28.03 per person for the weekend. That is for accommodation in a single-sex dormitory, breakfast is included, other meals and transport are excluded.

This is a YHA members' price with our Affiliated Group discount but you don't need to be a YHA member as you would be covered by our YHA affiliated group membership card. We made a group booking with YHA in June 2013 and we are offering a limited number of spaces via Meetup. The total number on this trip is 12, 3 males and 9 females, accommodation is in single-sex dormitories.

You should be prepared for winter weather and muddy ground so you will need suitable walking boots and waterproof clothing. If you are interested please read our Fact Sheets 1, 2 and 3.

Accommodation at YHA Canterbury for this Group weekend is for bed and breakfast only, and like nearly all YHA accommodation in England and Wales, it has a self-catering kitchen. You can prepare your own packed lunch and Saturday evening meal. On Saturday evening some of us may go out for a meal in Canterbury.

As Canterbury is well served by public transport and parking near YHA Canterbury is limited we are not offering Group transport for this weekend.

How to book

If you RSVP for this event, you will be asked some questions about previous walking experience.

You will also need to pay for your accommodation (£28.03). Because of YHA booking conditions for groups, we need to receive payment no later than 12th November 2013.

Payments can be by cheque or cash. If this is your first event with North London Outdoor Group, you will need to pay by attending one of our Tuesday evening meetings in Barnet. Other arrangements may be possible such as meeting one of the Event Hosts on a day walk but you need to agree this with the Event Host in advance.

If there are no spaces available then you can join the waiting list and you will be informed if a space becomes available.

Other weekends away

This is one of about 20 YHA weekends away that North London Outdoor Group organises each year and we have some more coming up in 2014 including YHA Alstonefield, YHA Haworth, YHA South Downs, YHA Sherwood Forest.

As stated on our 'About Us' page on Meetup, you can attend three day walks or evening walks plus four Tuesday evening social meetings plus one Group weekend away without paying any membership charge. If you would like to attend events after your free allowance, you would need to apply for annual membership of North London Outdoor Group.

Hi Beth, The plan for Saturday's walk is to take a bus to Godmersham (on A28 towards Ashford) and walk on NDW path back to Canterbury. We can either walk 9.8 miles or go to the next bus stop and walk 12 miles. On Fri eve /Sat morning I can see what the preference is for the walk. Jane

Hi Jane. Thanks. I walked that part recently, so I will just join your Sunday walk and will spend Saturday exploring Canterbury and visiting relatives nearby. I will be getting to the hostel very late on Friday due to work commitments, so will possibly not see you. When and where do we meet on Saturday? Best wishes, Beth

Hi Dave and Jane, just wondering if it is worth us getting Plus Bus with our rail tickets for the Saturday and / or Sunday? Many thanks, Beth

Hi Beth, The plan is to take a single bus ride on Saturday morning to the start of the walk, then we walk back into Canterbury along the North Downs Way/Pilgrims Way. On Sunday the planned walk starts and finishes at YHA Canterbury. It probably is not worth getting the Plus Bus if you intend coming on Saturday's walk. As there are engineering works on the railway between Canterbury and Central London on Sunday where all or part of the journey will be made by bus, I suggest you either drive or travel by National Express Coach from Victoria Coach Station.
