Weekend away - Cheddar Gorge and Mendip Hills, Somerset

  • Sep 19, 2014 · 6:00 PM
  • This location is shown only to members

Stop Press! Due to a cancellation, one space has become available on this trip and RSVPs are open until 3rd September. As the accommodation is in single-sex dormitories, this is a female space but it may also be possible to change it to a male space if required.

We plan to walk Saturday and Sunday around Cheddar Gorge which is up to 137 m (449ft) deep and on the surrounding Mendip Hills. There is an option to visit Cheddar Caves independently if you like (£18.95).

We travel to Cheddar on Friday evening and return on Sunday evening. Friday and Saturday nights at YHA Cheddar. This is a modernised Victorian house in the village of Cheddar, approx. 1 km from Cheddar gorge.

Accommodation cost is £13.15 per person per night so that's £26.30 per person for the weekend. That is for accommodation only in a single-sex dormitory, excluding breakfast, other meals or transport.

This is YHA accommodation at members' price with a further discount but you don't need to be a YHA member as you would be covered by our YHA Affiliated Group membership card. We made a group booking months ago and we are offering a limited number of spaces via Meetup. The total number on the trip is likely to be 6 - 7.

Typically we might plan a 10 - 12 mile walk for Saturday and maybe 7 - 8 miles Sunday. If you would like to join us on our walks, you will need suitable walking boots and waterproof clothing. If you are interested please read our Fact Sheets 1, 2 and 3.

Like nearly all YHA accommodation in England and Wales, YHA Cheddar has a self-catering kitchen. You can prepare your own breakfast, packed lunch and Saturday evening meal. Alternatively, you can book YHA breakfast. On Saturday evening some of us may have a meal at YHA Cheddar or go out for a pub meal.

We normally arrange car sharing from Barnet and at our Group's standard mileage rate, this would cost about £26.50 per person for the 304 mile return trip.

How to book

You can only attend one of our weekends away if you have already attended one of our day walks or evening walks or a Tuesday evening meeting.

If you RSVP for this event, you will be asked some questions about previous walking experience and whether you would like to be included in our Group Transport arrangements.

You will need to pay for your accommodation (£26.30) no later than 3rd September 2014. You can pay in person by cash or cheque if you attend one or our day walks, evening walks or Tuesday evening meetings. If you have already attended one of these, then you can post a cheque to us.

If you would like to be included in our Group transport arrangements, you will also be asked to pay a separate transport deposit of £26.50.

Other weekends away

This is one of about 20 weekends away that North London Outdoor Group organises each year staying in YHA accommodation or similar. We have some more in 2014 including YHA Betws-y-Coed, YHA Wilderhope Manor, Court Hill Centre (Ridgeway, Wantage), YHA Cambridge.

As stated on our 'About Us' page on Meetup, you can attend three day walks or evening walks plus four Tuesday evening social meetings plus one Group weekend away without paying any membership charge. If you would like to attend events after your free allowance, you would need to apply for annual membership of North London Outdoor Group.
