Peabody Book Club

We are a lively, spirited group of women who love to read and are open to stretching their comfort zone.  Books are selected by a rotation of participants who will suggest 3 books and one will be selected by majority vote. The person who chose the book will lead the discussion/questions at that meeting.

Our Book of the Month selection is:  The Sportswriter by Richard Ford. Someone had recommended reading Canada, but I thought it best to begin with the 1st book in the trilogy....

As a sportswriter, Frank Bascombe makes his living studying people--men, mostly--who live entirely within themselves. This is a condition that Frank himself aspires to. But at thirty-eight, he suffers from incurable dreaminess, occasional pounding of the heart, and the not-too-distant losses of a career, a son, and a marriage. In the course of the Easter week in which Ford's moving novel transpires, Bascombe will end up losing the remnants of his familiar life, though with his spirits soaring.

hi all, I'm glad you met even though the book was lousy, I only read a little bit and realized that I didn't like it and had to drive home late last night anyway, did you plan books for the winter, is there a new organizer yet. I am going to pick up the November book today which sounds great, we can discuss the groups future at the November meeting, I love it and hope it continues, I am just too swamped with work to do anything extra right now!!

Chatting with the girls always enjoyable. The book was a bust, however.

This book sounds good. Just having joined, I don't think I can read it in a night. I will be on the lookout for your next book group. I love reading.

it turns out that I will be coming home late from NH after giving a talk at a conference and I don't know if I can make it. I will rsvp cancel and show up if able. We need someone to lead the talk on this book. Things got a bit confusing with the book changes, but I have Jackie down for leading the talk on The Sportswriter. I don' t know if she will be traveling or back?? we also need to go over some new titles to plan for the winter if there is a new organizer. We are all set for November with the book the Shadow of the Banyon. (I am interested in reading The Aviator's wife next year). If you don't make a new winter schedule at this meeting we can work on it in November. I plan on being there :-)

I started the group because there wasn't any other type of group like this. I've met some great folks in the group who have become close friends and have also met some amazing business owners.
