Volunteer and serve breakfast at the New England Center for Homeless Veterans

I volunteer a couple of times a month serving lunch at the shelter. Great group of men and women who have served our country and have come back needing a little help. The Center, which was started by a Veteran, provides housing, health care, social services, food, as well as a multitude of other services for our returning heroes. They have volunteer groups come in on weekends and do breakfast service. We don't provide the food, just smiles and friendly faces. The serving starts at 7:15am and we would be done by around 9.  We have gone as a group several times and hope to keep this up monthly, there's a limit to 6 servers each time. It's really a wonderful time. Some of the ladies asked about baking/bringing something. I also spoke with the head of the kitchen....just avoid things with nuts because of allergies. Hope to see you all then! We can carpool, it's near the Orange line and if you drive in you can park right in front. Also remember a hat, you need to have your head/hair covered to serve.

We may be opening this date up to additional ladies for some gift wrapping activity.  I am just awaiting confirmation from the Community Service group.  Stay tuned.

Just wanted to take a moment to thank all of the ladies that were at the Center today. The Vets were thrilled with both breakfast and their gifts. CJ the Community Support person I deal with has told me on multiple occasions that both the kitchen staff as well as the Vets love when we come in to serve. It's all about you ladies. Thank you for the laughs, the kindness and the support you show the Veterans on a regular basis.

It was such a lovely morning, as it always is. I wonder if they realize just how much kindness and gratitude they show we are there. I feel like I walk away having gotten more good will than I have. Thank you for keeping this going and finding ways to make it really special for them. I will be making eggnog French toast next Saturday! Happy Holidays:-)

All of the gift bags were delivered to the Center today and have been put up on some rack shelves and are ready to be distributed. I have our Adopt A Vet bags ready and a special bag for Nikita who is a service dog who is assigned to one Vet but whose sweetness brings joy to many there. I have the aprons and some fabric pens and we'll set those up to be signed in the Conference room. Everything all ready to have a wonderful day together and spread Christmas joy. Looking forward to seeing all of you tomorrow and thank you in advance for a wonderful morning.
I plan on being there through the whole breakfast (9:30) however anyone who wants to leave at the regular time is welcome to. See everyone tomorrow!

I have updated the # of people coming to this event to 10 people. We'll have our regular servers, but we'll also need ladies to help pass out the gifts we put together at the beginning of the month. I'll be cooking. If you cannot come, please update your status ASAP. The ladies who were on the list to serve breakfast, I know who you are, so unless you are more interested in doing gifts, you'll still be on the food crew. Looking forward to a wonderful day with you all. Thank you for all the good work you do.
If anyone wants to bring in extra food, please feel free to bring in yogurt, fruit or any baked items. The folks at the center appreciate it.

Ladies, I've bought some plain aprons and put the guys names and a little picture about them on the aprons. I'll be bringing some fabric pens to sign the aprons...I will put them in the conference room and we'll give them to the guys once everyone has a chance to sign them. So come in a couple of minutes early and stop in the conference room to sign them.

Christine, not everyone will likely want the whip cream, but I'm thinking 7 or 8 cans.

  • Christine

I can bring the whipped cream, would that work? I can buy the cans ... Just not sure how many to buy?

For this breakfast because it's right before Christmas, I've decided to make egg nog french toast with whip cream and nuts. If you ladies want to bring in something extra please do, if someone or multiple of you want to do syrup, let me know or otherwise I'll pick some up.
Thanks and looking forward to seeing you all
