Peabody Book Club

We are a lively, spirited group of women who love to read and are open to stretching their comfort zone. Books are selected by a rotation of participants who will suggest 3 books and one will be selected by majority vote. The person who chose the book will lead the discussion/questions at that meeting.

Our Book of the Month selection is: The Black Dahlia by James Ellroy. "This is a story of murder and obsession that takes the true details of the unsolved 1947 Elizabeth Short murder and creates a fictional story of a police detective determined to solve the case. Ellroy uses the story to delve into the dark recesses of the human psyche and force the reader to deal with obsession, evil, right and wrong."

We have chosen books for October and Novemeber and will not meet in December. Please bring suggetions to this meeting to help plan the 2013 reading lineup. This group is open to all members of the North Shore women's Group, whether you are new, have been coming for years or have been taking a break ....we will be happy to see you.

Note that this month we meet on the 5th Friday due to Thanksgiving, not the 4th.

Glad I was able to make one of these! Interesting that almost all of us had the same reaction to the book. Looking forward to the next read.

i will be preparing my questions later today and think we can have an interesting discussion about writing style, how it differs between men and women writers. I just realized that this is based on a true story, so some interesting material there. Yes, its gross and icky and its ok if some of us don't finish. the question is why was this a NY times best seller. I randomly found it from a recommended site on the internet and I like murder mysteries, but it certainly isn't what i expected. So... don't let the content scare newcomers away, we are still a fun group!!!!!!and having only 5-7 people is just fine. I just hope that we don't have last minute cancellations and end up with 2-3 people or god forbid 1-2......

I've been listening to the book and all of the gruesome details made me cringe so much that I almost had to pull the car over! I agree, it's a difficult book to get through but I'll finish it and for sure it will spark some lively discussion. see you all Friday night!

Hi everyone, I look forward to my first hosting, seeing previous members and new faces at our first fall meeting. I was not wild about the book Black Dahlia but i think it will generate a lively discussion. It looks like we have about 7-8 people planning to come - the numbers keep changing but I think that this will be the the perfect number :-)

    Hi Mary,
You can ask Sue about organizing events and you can post an event on the calendar. Peabody book club takes place in Barnes and Noble each last Friday of the month. Sorry for any inconvenience.

I'm not really a "book" person but, would love to play Scrabble, Hearts, Boggle or your choice, in the Cafe on Sept. 28th, if I have any takers. Your thoughts?
