Canoe and Kayak Joe Pool Lake & Walnut Creek Paddling Trail

The weather will be getting warmer, and we just need an excuse to check out the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department's newly established inland Paddling Trails!  This paddling trail is 5 miles out and back along the shore of Joe Pool Lake and up Walnut Creek.

Loyd Park

Admission to the park is $10 per carload.  This park is clean and well maintained.  $10 gets you access to two swim beaches, covered picnic tables, trails, and more.  The park also offers overnight camping starting at $20 per site.

More information about Loyd Park here.

Joe Pool Lake and Walnut Creek Paddling Trail

Here's a map of the paddling trail.  It's approximately 5 miles from Loyd Park to the 360 bridge and back.

It's a good paddle for beginners and intermediate experience levels.

Get more information on the paddling trail by visiting the TPWD website.

Kayak and Canoe Rentals

First, I might suggest asking others here on the NTO site if they have extra kayaks or have room in their canoe.  Second, kayak and canoe rentals are available from outfitters around DFW.  However, rentals are not offered at Loyd Park.

Check out this list of kayak and canoe rentals around DFW.

Post Paddle Cookout

After we're done out on the lake, I'll host a simple cookout with chips, hot dogs, and sodas at one of the picnic sites at Loyd Park.

So I am thinking of what organizations I need to contact to get this started and get "permission" to organize clean up efforts. I agree with Diane's concern of not getting charged admission and I am sure that will get waved if we go through the proper channels. I used to do this down in Houston many moons ago on Buffalo Bayou. We would get local businesses to donate supplies, snacks and drinks for the volunteers. My first contact seems logical being the Texas Parks and Wildlife. Any other suggestions on who to contact?

Also, Grand Prairie regularly sponsors a clean up of the creek, the last one held in October. No word on when the next official one will be held, and at least one other kayak group has done a clean up as well.

By the way, I have canoed on the Trinity River before, and if you guys think this was trashy, you haven't seen nothing. Now THAT is a river that could definitely use a little TLC. There is a place to put in just below that "fake rapids" the city made (which should not be gone through, I have heard). Trinity River Expeditions does some cool trips if anyone is interested.

I'd join in for a clean up, but I don't think the park should charge us an entry fee.

Great People, Fun Time, River needs a cleanup! I would volunteer to clean it up on a different occasion if there is a group doing that let me know.

A big thank you to Della for organizing the trip, herding the cats, and then cooking up lunch as well!!! What a nice big group we had!

Not sure how the rating system works, but just wanted to say that the one star rating was for the river, not the group. This is a great group and don't want to give anyone the wrong impression. Wish I'd had a garbage bag today or better yet if everyone would of had one, maybe we could have made a difference.

Looks like the wx. move off to east, is the paddling still on? I have an extra kayak that can bring, anyone is welcome to use. PFD an paddle included. just post to let me know will be leaving house about 9am

    March 30, 2013

  • Teresa

Where are you launching? At the spot with the Paddle Trail sign and picnic area? or at the spot where the map marker is? or somewhere else? The map shows a marker on the first parking area to the right of the entrance, but the paddle trail parking is actually the second left after you turn right and pass the main parking area. Forgive my concern, I just have visions of people wandering lost on the roads of the park.

    March 29, 2013

    • David

Hi, Teresa, you just don't like turning that van & trailer on narrow park trails! I'll be in the Silver F150 and my green barge again....see ya. I'm aiming for the paddling trail signs unless I hear otherwise....

      March 29, 2013

    • Teresa

See you at the paddle trail sign, then. But no trailer. 4 boats, 4 people, 1 van, but no trailer. Just a "van of holding."

      March 30, 2013

  • David

Della: What could I bring...? How about if I bring a case of water bottles, and paper towels, plates, flatware and cups?

    March 27, 2013

  • Crispin

So, how long would a 5 mile paddle take for a beginner? Does anyone have any advice about things to bring or wear? Water bottle, obviously. Change of clothes (just in case!). Any other thoughts?

    1 · March 27, 2013

    • Teresa

This trip can be done in 2 to 4 hours (longer if you stop to do photography or get out and look at something) Wear layers, with the top layer water and wind resistant or proof, and the bottom layer a moisture wicking synthetic. I sometimes use my cycling shirt and pants as a base layer, with a waterproof jacket over the top. Your PFD (Personal flotation device) will add a little warmth to your torso. The temperature should be fairly warm, so be sure the lower layer is comfortable. Wear diving or water shoes or shoes you don't mind getting wet and muddy. Bring water and an energy snack. If you are not used to paddling, gloves that pad your hand a little will help. Always bring change of clothes and a towel just in case of an unexpected swim.

      1 · March 27, 2013

    • David

...sunscreen for your exposed parts, whistle or noise maker, sunglasses, camera in waterproof protection, energy snack...

      March 27, 2013

  • Teresa

I might be able to get a couple more yaks. I have access to 2 rec boats, a small person sit on top, and a white water boat for a small person. These are our family boats and, depending on how many are needed, I might need help with transport. The price would be the same as for Della's boats just to keep things fair (and Della's rentals would be used first, since she is risking her own money) Let me know.

    Single Kayak Rental - $20 each - 6 Available

I have secured 6 single person kayaks for rental on that Saturday March 30. I'm charging you what the rental outfitter is charging me, $20 per kayak. You'll also get a paddle and life vest. My husband and I will handle hauling the equipment to and from the lake.

If you're interested, please reply to this post and I'll "reserve" one for you.

    March 5, 2013

    • Della M.

I've got kayaks reserved for Crispin (1) Andy (1) Louel (1) Mike (1) and Leann (2). All six of the kayaks are accounted for. If any of you guys change your mind, PLEASE have the decency to let me know. I'm paying the outfitter for all 6 of these kayaks out of my pocket. If you no show, I still have to pay for the kayak rental. But if it rains, of course we're going to cancel.
