Campout at Lake Ray Roberts SP - Johnson Branch

The heat FINALLY winds down at the end of September, and we dare to venture outdoors during the daylight, let's give some love to the oft forgotten other side of Lake Ray Roberts State Park, the Johnson Branch unit.

This part of the park is on the north side of the lake and offers similar amenities to the much more crowded Isle du Bois on the southern shore. Volleyball courts, swim beach, hiking trail, showers, pit toilets...you'll miss nothing camping on this side of the lake!  But you will enjoy the peace and quiet.

We will be staying at Dogwood Canyon because it hosts the best tent camping sites available.  These sites are no water/electricity sites.  (Water is available from 2 taps in the campground)  Reservations are available online through TPWD. Two tents are allowed per site, so talk to someone else who is coming and buddy up!

I can promise you there will be no shortage of good stories, fun people, and laughter. Bring your favorite camp food, and beverage (whatever it may be...) and camp chair. FIREWOOD GATHERING IS PROHIBITED so be an awesome North Texas Outdoors-person and bring some FIREWOOD. There is a precedence of awesome campfires with this group, we can't disappoint this time!

Itinerary:
9/28
9:00 am - 12:00 pm pitch camp, meet and greet.
12:00pm - 5:00pm explore the park, canoe, whatever suits ya!
5:00pm - 8:00pm eating and drinking round the campfire
8:00 - ? Mostly drinking around the campfire
Perhaps a night hike for those inclined?

9/29
8:00 - 9:00 Breakfast
9:00 - 10:00 Break camp, load up

I might consider that just to get a good spot and save the rush in the morning.
    I mean going tonight.

    September 27, 2013

  • Bonnie H.

I am planning on being there rain or shine.

    September 26, 2013

  • Bob S.

I plan on going either way but if no-one is there, then I'm going to King Spa as a back up plan.

    September 26, 2013

  • Della M.

This will be a rain or shine event. Hopefully more shine than rain, but there's a strong change of rain in the overnight hours. Nothing severe is forecasted. For those who have never camped in the rain, I hope you'll see this as an opportunity, instead of a deterrent. There's nothing like a thunderstorm in the woods while in a tent!

I called the park today and the burn ban has been lifted for now so if you have firewood you might bring it. I'm bringing some and also two large canopy tents in case the forcast is correct.

Hi All, I just booked my site, arriving Saturday morning. This is my first camping trip in 10 years. I am so looking forward to hanging out and meeting everyone. I work at Cabela's and talk about being outdoors all the time. Nice that I get a chance to do it myself. I can share my site if anyone is interested. I have a small tent so will be plenty of room. See you all Saturday.

      September 24, 2013

    • Ellen

Yes it is just due west of Isle duBois off of FM455. It is supposed to be a fun thing (kayaking, rock climbing, music, food vendors, pony rides, archery, birds of prey, etc) and you can get cheaper tickets online instead of at the gate.

I just joined this group. Is this just for adults or are kids welcomed too?

    September 23, 2013

There is a reply to a comment on Aug 20 that kids are welcome. I will be bringing my 2 boys along and know a couple others who were talking about bringing theirs.

      September 24, 2013

FYI for those who haven't seen the weather yet: it's looking like 60% chance of rain(1 in.) / scattered t-storms on Saturday going into the evening, so bring your rain gear. We will be camping closer to the water and the kid fish pond, but we will definitely stop by and say Hi!

Planning to stay in juniper cove next to dogwood canyon. I'm going up on friday. The bike trail looks great for connecting with the other campsites. Bring your bikes!

      1 · September 11, 2013

I have to pull out of this one. I don't have the type of camping gear suitable to hike in. And I bring way too much for hiking lol I hope you all have a great time.

    September 2, 2013

    • Annette K.

Kristin, this isn't really a hiking trip, just around 100 yards to walk-in gear. Maybe some of those who don't want a walk-in, can camp at Oak Point, which actually has some nice southerly lake breezes this time of year (cooler!), sites on the water and close to parking lot. Just a suggestion if the walk-in sites deter you.

      1 · September 2, 2013

  • Annette K.

I'll be making a site reservation for Friday, if anyone wants to go early. You can email me at [masked] to buddy up, carpool, etc.

Is there a specific range of site numbers we are trying to get?

    2 · August 21, 2013

    • Della M.

The campground where we're staying doesn't let you reserve a specific site (online, at least). I don't think we'll have too much competition for the primitive sites.

      2 · August 23, 2013

  • Della M.

I've got a campsite reserved if anyone would like to bunk up, we can split the fees.

    1 · August 20, 2013

    • Della M.

Okay, sounds great. Y'all can both bunk up with me. If the MAN wants to hike in and see how many tents we have at our site, then let him come on over! Besides, me and paul technically don't have tents...WE HAVE HAMMOCKS!!

      August 21, 2013

Lol! I've got the family size tent. Can be the portable condo.
