Lake Mineral Wells State Park - Tour Texas!

As of 12/9, there are no campsites left in the Post Oak campground at Lake Mineral Wells SP.  If you're interested in coming along, prowl the comments section to see if anyone has space at their site.

Monthly car-camping adventure touring Texas' State Parks. Bring kids, dogs, and everything that will fit in the car.

Lake Mineral Wells State Park is 50 miles west of Fort Worth.  This is a large park with hike-in backpacking sites, rock climbing, fishing, kayaking, and a 20-mile biking trail.  The biking trail travels from the park to the city of Weatherford.

Those interested in rock climbing will need to have a rock climbing guide before climbing at the park.

We will be staying in the Post Oak camping area. These are primitive sites, with no water or electricity at the sites themselves. A water spigot is located in the vicinity of the campsites, and toilets are a short walk away.

--------------------------------------------

It's car camping, so bring your luxury items. Big tent, big bag, and lots of good food. Campfire games and adult beverages are always welcome. Just remember to put your beverage in an alternate container. State parks have a strict 'no public consumption of alcohol' policy.

Everyone is responsible for securing their own campsite.  You can reserve a campsite on Texas Parks and Wildlife's website, however, they will not allow you to reserve a particular primitive site. You'll be asked your preference of site when you check in at the park. Consider sharing a ride and a camping site with another NTO-er.

The first person to check in should post their site number on this meetup page under the comments after checking in, that way we can all get sites near one another.

Firewood gathering is prohibited in all Texas State Parks. Please bring firewood so we may continue our tradition of awesome NTO campfires.

The itinerary for these Tour Texas! adventures is standard:

Friday:
3:00 - 7:00 Early Bird check-in and camp set up
7:00 - 9:00 Dinnertime
9:00 - ? Campfire Fun

Saturday:
7:00 - 9:00 Camp Breakfast
9:00 - 5:00 Latecomer Camp Setup & Park Exploration
5:00 - 7:00 Dinnertime
7:00 - ? Campfire Fun

Sunday:
7:00 - 9:00 Camp Breakfast
9:00 -10:00 Break Camp
10:00 - Conclusion of Meetup, you can explore, hangout, or head home.

Camping, rock climbing, mountain biking, kayaking and a great night time geocache event. Now that was a full weekend! I found out though that there is a difference between being in great shape and being in great backpacking shape. The pace these seasoned hikers set on the geocaching adventure about killed me. I am so sore!

I have a site that I am sharing. I plan on coming out early Saturday morning to join the hikers. I haven't met anyone in this group, so if you see someone that looks lost and fits the description in my profile picture, give me a shout. I couldn't manage the Dutch oven planning this week.

      January 7, 2014

    • Stephanie

I'll be arriving sometime Saturday morning.

      January 17, 2014

  • Richard M.

This will be my first outing with this group. I will be arriving on Friday. I snore like a freight train and like to carry every camp luxury possible when car-camping. Wife won't come with me unless we bring the RV. I want to try some new ideas in the dutch oven but will need some help eating and evaluating the results. I have first hand experience at loosing battles and equipment to the raccoons, so I made a reservation for one of the shelters. They allow up to two tents on the site alongside the shelter. I would be glad to share the site (and fee) with someone who wants electricity and water at the site. The shelters are right next to the Post Oak area too.

    January 9, 2014

I'd been waffling about attending because I'd had a sinus infection/cold all week but I'm feeling better and really want to join you all. Does anyone have space left at their site for my tent? I'd be headed out there today. Let me know.

    January 17, 2014

Anybody interested in planning a dutch oven smorgasbord as part of the fun?

    4 · December 19, 2013

    • Richard M.

Maybe a "pot luck" dutch oven meal (or two) would be good. I was wanting to try "Mountain man breakfast" in mine and maybe a chili-cornbread for dinner one night. I have a 10inch oven and feeds 4-5 depending on appetite. Learning from each other is also one of the best parts of the meal.

    Trail hike:
How about Saturday 9:00am depart camp for the primitive trail hike for those interested in exploring that part of the park, lunch on the trail, and back at camp by 1pm, to leave time for other activities, such as canoeing, fishing, rock climbing, cooking etc? Those just coming for the day can join in at that time too. Then Kib is leading a kid friendly hike at 1pm, (flatter trails?) as well.

Rock climbers: There has been varied and sporadic discussion about climbing at Penitentiary Hollow within the park on this trip. I thought I might group our plans into one thread. Ready...and...go!

    January 15, 2014

    • Craig

Bring your gear Miranda. You might change your mind when you see the walls. Better to have gear and not climb than to have the desire to climb but no gear.

@Bonnie, (2nd try). I will be there much earlier than 7pm, so I will try to register in your name and get us a good site. I hope that they will let me do that?

I won't be that early, but do want to climb for at least an hour that morning. Provided my kids cooperate and want to.

      January 15, 2014

I'll have a three-room tent but only plan to use one of the rooms, so glad to loan one of the rooms to whoever wants to try it. Each room has it's own door to the outside, but be advised the walls are just cloth dividers.

      January 15, 2014

    January 13, 2014

    • Kib R.

Can you be more specific of what help you need? Ie, if needing some gear, what are you missing? This is car camping, so you won't need as much as was discussed in the backpacking courses.

      January 13, 2014

  • Kristie

I know I should go through all of the comments, but there are over 235 of them, so I'll just ask- does anyone have room for me and a hammock?

    January 11, 2014

    • Ellen

Guys, also remember they almost always charge an "over vehicle limit" for more than 2 vehicles per site and they will charge it to the 3rd vehicle coming to that site. It is usually $3 per night I think.

      January 11, 2014

    • Miranda

Kristie you are welcome to hammock at our site. David and I ride together so we only have one vehicle.

      January 11, 2014

  • Craig

Attention night time hikes/geocachers; Sometime after supper, those who want to join me for an adventure, gather and drive to the Primitive camping/trail-head parking area. There we will start out on foot for about a 10 mile + geocaching hike. If other cahcers are going we will hit more but there is two I'm after. One is located at the highest elevation in the park, the other we will have to jump the park fence and enter an 1800's graveyard. During the trip we can also go by a...I don't know what to call it. It is an abandoned structure, part of Ft. Wolters established in[masked], before the park was a park. Bring water, flashlights, a snack, comfortable hiking boots and dress for the weather. One cache owner listed the hike as "not for children". Expect to get scratched up by thorns as we cachers tend to go off trail and push through brush as opposed to going around.

    2 · January 9, 2014

    • Craig

Thanks for the tip Kib. Just talked to the park. Hunting season closures have ended. The primitive hiking area and rock climbing is currently (01/10) closed due to wet conditions. Boat ramps are closed due to low water conditions. Current weather forecast shows the weekend of the 18th to be rain free. We should be good to go.
