Enchanted Rock State Natural Area - Tour Texas! ★

Site-sharing available.  The park will allow more than 2 tents per site, as long as they are not "circus-sized".  2 cars per site, add'l vehicles are $5 per day.

Monthly car-camping adventure touring Texas' State Parks. Bring kids, dogs, and everything that will fit in the car.

This park is all about hiking, hiking, hiking.  Many trails offer miles and miles of walking bliss.  The large pink granite formation rises out of the ground, and anchors the park.  This will be a longer drive at 220 miles southwest of Fort Worth.

This park is really for the tent camper and backpacker.  The park offers rock hounds and geology buffs an opportunity to investigate some of Texas' most interesting geology.  The park also offers rock-climbing, stargazing, and did I mention....hiking?

The Enchanted Rock area has one of the darkest night skies in Texas.  Bring the telescope or a good pair of binoculars to peer deep into space.

We will be staying in the developed campsites on the south side of the river. These are primitive sites, with no water or electricity at the sites themselves. A water spigot is located in the vicinity of the campsites, and pit toilets are a short walk away.

--------------------------------------------

It's car camping, so bring your luxury items. Big tent, big bag, and lots of good food. Campfire games and adult beverages are always welcome. Just remember to put your beverage in an alternate container. State parks have a strict 'no public consumption of alcohol' policy.

You can reserve a campsite on Texas Parks and Wildlife's website, however, they will not allow you to reserve a particular primitive site. You'll be asked your preference of site when you check in at the park. Consider sharing a ride and a camping site with another NTO-er.

The first person to check in should post their site number on this meetup page under the comments after checking in, that way we can all get sites near one another.

Firewood gathering is prohibited in all Texas State Parks. Please bring firewood so we may continue our tradition of awesome NTO campfires.

The itinerary for these Tour Texas! adventures is standard:

Friday:
3:00 - 7:00 Early Bird check-in and camp set up
7:00 - 9:00 Dinnertime
9:00 - ? Campfire Fun

Hey, did anyone happen to wind up with some extra gray spoons from the potluck? I am missing two - they are part of a set; they have holes in the handle where they snap together. If you happen to have them I would love to have them back, thanks!

    May 19

    • Crispin

Rachel, if the grey spoon has two holes in the handle, it's mine and I'd love to have it back since it's part of a set. :) Are you going to the meetup tomorrow or any future camping activities? Or what part of DFW do you live in. Thanks!

Had a great time! Would do that one again...especially the cave!

    May 19

  • Raymond

Nice Area. Would consider going back in cooler weather since there is no lake or water feature. Maybe hike to top of summit for Sunset and then down and then up again for sunrise but a whole weekend is overkill especially with kids if you are not a climber. Maybe combine with Fredericksburg for some wine tasting

Yes I have a one person backpacking tent she can use, but it is very very small. If anyone has anything bigger she might be more comfortable.

My friend and I will probably arrive rather late. Does anyone know what the latest is that they will let us in? The website says they are open until 10 pm, but office hours end at 4:30 pm.

    May 15

I'm sorry folks but unless something changes at the last minute, I won't be able to make it down there. Had some work come in on the hook and I have more than I can do at the moment. If I can get loose I will call ahead but doubt it will happen. Sorry.

Camp site available: due to work-related obligations, I can't make this weekend. Totally bummed - I bought a new tent and everything. Della - sorry about this. Please make sure my site goes to good use! Thanks very much.

    May 14

    • Michael M.

Hi Rachel, looking back through the old threads, it looks like Della is the site owner and you should still be good to ask at the gate for that site location under Della's name.

      May 15

    • Mark R.

Rachel - Yes, Della is the one who has that information. I inherited the site from a previous member who also had to cancel.

      May 15

  • Bob S.

Bonnie, Since I will most likely get there before the rest of our site group, What area or camp number do you prefure? I will most likely leave Hillsboro around 10:00 AM. Not sure which area is primitive.

    May 15

    • Steve

Hi bob. Are you sharing the site with Bonnie Hart? If so I am also putting a tent up there and plan to leave Dallas around 1 pm. Please txt the site number/info to me at[masked]

Anyone else have a climbing harness? I'll bring some gear for sport climbing.

    May 10

    • Steven

Hey I have a harness but been years since I climbing. What are the ratings. I also have room on my primitive campsites

      May 14

    • Isaac G.

Thanks for the offer, but unfortunately my free time this weekend has been diverted to building a set of stairs. I would still bring your climbing gear. From reading previous post I think a couple guys might still be doing some sport and trad climbing.

      May 15

      May 10

    • Jeannine

Elaine, I have just had to cancel for family issues. Please give my site to someone else and thank you! Hope to meet you on the next outing:-)

      May 15

  • Jeannine

Sorry all, I have to cancel, family issues have come up. I hope to make the next one!

    May 15

  • Michael M.

I would like to grab Mark Ryan's site and join. If there is no room or if primative hike in, would the park allow me to sleep in the back of my SUV in parking lot?

    May 14

  • Bonnie H.

was just reading the State park info on Enchanted rock state park. At the top of the page it states that the park is subject to closure based on the number of cars that have entered the park and how full the parking lots are. This is to help protect the natural environment. So I recomend that we carpool as much as possible. I have room for one to carpool with me. I live in burleson. If you want to drive to me you can leave your car at my place and we can travel together. e-mail me if you are interested.

    May 12

    • Bonnie H.

Yes, I am planning on you sharing the site. We also have Bob Shronk sharing our site. He is leaving from Hillsburo in the morning so he should be there before us. Janie is also sharing our site and I have not heard when she is planning on leaving.

      May 14

    • Jane

Hey Bonnie, I will find out tomorrow nite what time Della is picking me up on fri. I think around 10 ish. Will post when I find out.

      May 14

  • Kristin

I just called the park and everyone would have to park in a parking lot near our sites. Also the earlier you can get there the better. As far as the park closing due to overcapacity, that is more of a problem on saturdays and sundays than it is on friday. So that is good to know. I'm excited! See you all in two days!

    May 14

  • Rahel F.

I have already reserved a primitive site. However, if there are non primitive site still left to share please let me know. I don't think I m ready for primitive camping yet. :)

Hi I got the dates wrong , and plan to come, is there a spot still available for a 2 person tent or if I can share a tent? Appreciate a response.

    May 13

  • Kristin

In the event the park closes due to being at capacity, it would only be closed for up to two hours. That makes me feel a bit better. At least it wouldnt be all weekend!

    May 12

  • Candy R.

does anyone know where the "primitive hike in" site are on the map? its not too clear to me.
