Deep Freeze Backpacking - LBJ Grasslands

Changed to a one night Friday car-camping trip with day-hike on Saturday due to potential winter weather on Sunday.

New hike route is between 10-12 miles to be covered on Saturday only.

We will be back at our cars on Saturday evening.  Those who want to go home can, and those who want to stay another night can camp.

The terrain is not as hilly as Cross Timbers at Texoma, but not as flat as the parks around here. So don't be intimidated by the mileage.

The biggest challenge will be the weather.  Highs forecasted in the 50's with a 15 mph north wind.

Hey folks, I'm here, I believe Tadra is on the left side of 900 rather than the right. I'm going to set up camp at the second site on the left. Don't see any burn ban signs, but we will need firewood if ya can bring some,[masked]

Hi Kate. I am looking at the weather forecast too. Hiking in 30-50's is ok but I don't want to be cold and wet.

I have my little cheapie walkies, I might take one of your more powerful ones since it'll probably have a longer range.

I am planning on doing the original route and hiking through Sunday, but I will not arrive until early Saturday morning. Call or message the cell if you're interested in doing original plan, or otherwise will probably see people Sat morning before I head out on trail. (972)[masked], Paul

I am still on for car camping Friday night (arriving by 7ish) then day hiking Saturday. Since I already loaded up the pack I'll have that with me just in case but don't really plan to hike Sunday in the cold rain

    From the NWS:

    Good morning,
A brief period of light freezing rain or sleet will be possible Sunday near and just northwest of Fort Worth, but no significant impacts are expected. A few ice pellets could also mix with the rain at times on Sunday across any part of Dallas or Fort Worth, but again, little or no impacts to roadways are expected in the DFW area at this time.

    IMPACTS
Where winter precipitation occurs, some icing on roadways can be expected. Bridges and overpasses will be the first to be impacted, and other major roadways could also become slick in areas that receive a period of steady sleet.

    TIMING
The primary timing for winter weather impacts will be from 8 AM Sunday to 8 PM Sunday.

By "first day" I'm assuming you mean Saturday morning? If so, what time you leaving in the morning? I'll be arriving Saturday morning and would like to hike with the group if possible.

    December 31, 2013

    • Jaxsonsmith

For those of us arriving early morning Saturday, how and where do you suggest us put our additional water with the groups? You guys are stock piling your water Friday night from what I read, correct?

      January 30, 2014

    • Della M.

We are stockpiling water, but the cache location may change due to shortening/rerouting the hike. Stay tuned, I'll have a new water cache location posted Thursday night.

Still on, but with changes to the route. Stay tuned, updates to follow Thursday evening.

      January 30, 2014

Where and when is everyone showing up on Friday? I assume we are camping out somewhere around the Sat morning departure point. I get off work Friday around 4:30 and should be able to make it to the area before 7pm - just need to know where!

    January 28, 2014

    • Della M.

From Decatur, follow FM 730 north 10 miles to CR 2461, turn left and at the fork; turn right on CR 2560, proceed 3 miles and turn left on FS Road 900. TADRA Point Trailhead is on the right at 2 miles.

      January 28, 2014

  • greg r.

Steve, I'm trying to get there around 4 pm. I'll camp at TADRA, or where ever they put me, idealy some where close to the Blue Trailhead. I drive a white denali and my cell is[masked], see ya there :)

I have a friend who did a trip here a few weeks ago that said a lot of this place is burned. Hopefully he was in a different part of the park!

    January 27, 2014

    • Della M.

I walked around out there on Sunday, and hit up about 5 different places along the trail. I didn't see any burned places. I didn't walk the whole trail though.

      January 27, 2014

    • Paul

I was there sunday also and I didn't see any evidence of anything burned

      January 27, 2014

  • Della M.

There is a conditional burn ban for Wise County. No open fires on Red Flag Warning days. The national weather service issues the red flag warnings.

    January 27, 2014

  • Jeff

The link for the gpx file does not work?

Also there is currently a burn ban/no open fires for Wise County. This is due to drought and high winds and was only recently put into effect. You can call the forestry office later in the week, to see if it is still in effect.

    January 27, 2014

I'm confused about the times. Hiking 9-11 miles on Friday night before camping, or is that Saturday morning, after camping close to the cars Friday night?

    January 25, 2014

    • Della M.

Friday night is car camping. No hiking on Friday. Saturday is the day we start movin'.

    iPhone owners, take heed!

To use the .gpx file provided, you can download a cool app called MotionX-GPS for $1.99. Then you can drag and drop the .gpx file into your iPhone using iTunes. All the trails and waypoints will appear in the app just as if you were using a GPS.

I'll bring 5 gallons or 10 gallons for the stash too

    December 24, 2013

    • Miranda

What exactly happens with the stash? Do we drive to that point? Where and how do we "stash" the water (and food??) supplies?

      1 · December 29, 2013

    • Della M.

On your way to TADRA point, drop off water at that point. When we hike by that point on the way to our campsite, (which is only a few hundred yards from that green arrow on the map) you can pick up the water.

You can drop food or other supplies there if you want to. I plan on trekking all my other stuff in. An extra gallon of water is just more than I want to carry (8 extra pounds) if I could just pick it up on the way instead.

Question for Della and others that backpack with their dogs: what preparations do you make for your four-legged companions? I've heard some actually get separate sleeping bags for them?

    1 · November 11, 2013

    • Della M.

They seemed to be happy as clams in that pouch. Would you recommend a particular brand or model to other toy-sized dog owners?

      November 26, 2013

    • Miranda

My older one kept leaning out trying to catch smells. I had to keep one hand on them to keep her from falling out. Clipping them to my backpack left my hands free for the hiking/climbing. It will depend on the dog's personality and train-ability. My girl is so front heavy she ends up doing a hand stand sometimes going down the stairs... :(

      November 27, 2013

  • Jason

I'm getting a 15 degree bag on sale so I'll be equipped. I agree with the others about the wet part though.

That's too bad that NOAA is calling for more drought. It's a sad state of affairs out at Black Creek Lake, David. Scott and I went out the weekend of 11/23, and what was once water is now a peninsula from the boat ramp out to the middle of the lake. I'll upload photos to the meetup site.

      November 25, 2013

    • David

We need the water and then some. When life gives you lemons, you can make lemonade. If we are going to have a dry winter, I'm going camping! :)

      1 · November 25, 2013

  • Steve R.

    Della
Besides Black creek reservoir is there a water source were we will be going and camping?

    November 22, 2013

    • David

Bonnie: to stage a cache, we can drop off a big water bottle or lock chest somewhere on the route before we start, so it can be there for us when we need it. :)

      November 25, 2013

    • Della M.

Miranda, after seeing Paul's water filter in action on the Broken Bow hike, I was sold. I bought a Platypus Gravity Works 4 liter water filtration system. 4 liters of water is filtered in 2.5 minutes. No pumping.

Prior, I was using Aquamira tablets to sterilize the creepy crawlies from the water. But the tablets do little for the taste and you need a separate filter to remove the grit. It just wasn't practical for sterilizing 6 liters of water at a time.
